The Directory was a body of five directors who had executive power in France. It was preceded by the National Convention. -
Napoleon Rises to Power
in 1799, Napoleon returned to France from the Egyptian Campaign. Known as an excellent strategist, Napoleon was able to overthrow the Directory and established the consulate. By 1800, Napoleon was the First Consul of France, and had total power. -
