    The bastille was a state prison on the east side of Paris. A mob of revolutionary’s assembled to demand the ammunition it held. When the prison governor refused to give in to their demands a battle ensued. The governor was seized and killed, and his head was carried round the streets on a spike. This symbolized the start of the French Revolution. The storming of the bastille is still celebrated in France with a national holiday every year.

    On the morning of October 5, 1989, in an eastern section of Paris, a young woman fed up with the shortage of bread banged a drum beginning a march among revolutionary women. The numbers grew as the march went on, marchers armed with pitchforks and torches. It culminated at the city hall of Paris with crowds in the thousands demanding bread.
