    Meeting of Estates General
    All 3 estates of France came together in a meeting to discuss the financial crisis. All estates only have one vote, since nobles and the clergies always over ruled the 3 (lowest) estate they fear they would take on the burden of the financial crisis. Thus leading to the 3rd estate breaking off and making their own National Assembly.
  • The Fall of Bastille

    The Fall of Bastille
    On July 14, 1789 a mob of people against Louis' regime marched in Bastille. The hungry, unemployed people vented their frustration. Louis' forces held for a few hours before finally letting the mob take over.

    In October a lot of the unemployed, hungry, restless women of France, broke into Queen Marie Antoinette's quarters. They demanded for bread and for the king to live in Paris with the people.
  • Flight to Varennes

    Flight to Varennes
    The king and his family decided to flee Paris/ France in a whole. Within miles of the border, the family was recognized in the town of Varennes. Forced to go back, this was devastating to the national assembly as they had to deal with a king against the constitution, who is hated by the people.

    With tensions high in Europe, everyone in France wanted to go to war for a different reason. Some wanted more power, other wanted just to spread the ideas and culture of France. Either way they ended up going to war.

    A crowd of about 20,000 people invaded the Tuileries Palace hoping to get the King and Queen. They escape, creating the "September Massacre" where suspected royalist were killed for just being royalists.

    Maximilien Robespierre named himself leader of new found committee, Reign of Terror. His promised to rid France of all enemies and protect the "virtue" of the nation. Within a year estimated 16,000 people were guillotined. He ended up being guillotined himself in 1794.

    After Maximilien Robespierre's death, the directory automatically became corrupt. Back from a military expedition, Napoleon Bonaparte took over and est. what he called a Consulate and made himself first Consul
