Meeting of the Estates General
This meeting was the first since 1614. It was a general assembly made up of all three Estates. King Louis XVI had summoned the assembly to inform others of his government's financial issues and to offer solutions. -
National Assembly
After being denied of the proposals for the financial issues by the king, the 3rd Estate forms a new assembly(National Assembly) made up of those willing to rebel against the King's orders. This leads to the Tennis-Court Oath, taken by all members of the National Assembly, vowing to go against the king's wishes. -
Storming of the Bastille
This event took part in Paris, France. The prison in Paris known as the Bastille, showed a great deal of royal authority and such. Although the prison didn't contain many prisoners, its attack was considered the flare of the French Revolution. The fall of the Bastille had happened because the 3rd Estate citizens of the National Assembly had been angry with the Royals and wanted to show a great deal of disrespect to them. -
Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen
This declaration was passed by the National Assembly. It shows the rights of all the people in all Estates as equals. This was influenced by Thomas Jefferson who worked with the actual writer of it. This declaration claimed that all rights were valid for every citizen at any time, in any place. It had a big impact on the liberation and democracy in Europe. -
Royal Family Attempts to Flee
By this time, the royal family had infuriated the people to the extent of having to leave the country in order to save their lives. They had gotten into trouble including driving the country into a huge hole of debt. When they tried to escape, they were caught, and brought back only to be publicly decapitated. -
Legislative Assembly Declares War on Austria and Prussia.
After seeing the people of France overthrow the government, they had become suspicious and were not willing to allow the ideas spreading to their own people. France being conscious of this, thinks that foreign countries would be able to defeat the government and make it easier for another to gain the power in replacement of Louis XVI. -
France Abolishes the Monarchy
The abolition of the monarchy was carried out by the National Assembly. -
Jacobins Take Over Government
Jean Paul Marat was a Jacobin author and was arrested for attacking the Girondins. The people turned more toward the Jacobins because of this event, seeing that Marat was a loved person. After gaining power, the Jacobins killed a group of Girondin leaders. -
Army Prepares
The French Army drafts 300,000 men to the army to fight the war. -
Moderate Government
The Directory Era was the new Moderate Government. Napoleon returned to France and overthrew the Directory, and became the new king.
