National Assembly
National Assembly is formed by Third Estate people because they are tired of the way they are being treated and want change. -
Tennis Court Oath Declared
Demand that there be a new constitution, and would not back down until there was a new one. -
Storming of Bastille
Bastille was a prison where weapons and gun powder were also kept. On the 14th of July, crowds of the Third Estate brought it down with explosives, and it was declared a Revolution. -
Declaration of the Rights of Man Written
End to tyranny, equal rights for all men, but NOT a constitution. -
Legislative Assembly
3 sections representing each estate: Radicals, Conservatives, and Moderates. They created laws, and made decisions. -
Execution of King Louis XVI
He was executed by the guillotine. -
Committee of Public Safety
12 person committee that made decisions, and at the head was Robespierre. -
The Reign of Terror
Under the rule of Robespierre, a time where many people died (mostly 1 and 2 estates -the aristocracy-) and the guillotine was in full use. Lasted until July 1794. -
Execution of Maximilien Robespierre
Robespierre was the leader of the Radicals, and the Reign of Terror, and believed that one needed to inflict fear to have people listen. -
DeChristianization
Robespierre attempted DeChristianization, and up to a certain extent he succeeded, not allowing freedom of religion, and creating a new God, which later on, he attempted to be. This ended in July 1794. -
The Directory controls France
The Directory was a 5 person council, that was meant to hold the country together- though it was corrupt- while they waited for a person to come and reassemble their chaotic country. It ended in 1799. -
Napoleon takes over in coup d'etat
Napoleon destroyed the Directory, and created a group of 3 consuls, and Napoleon becomes the leader of the group, and assumes "dictatorship". In France, when a man is able to gain power on the country so quickly, it is called "coup d'etat." -
Napoleon signs Concordat with Catholic Church
Napoleon signed the "concordat" with the Church, re-establishing the connection with the Catholic Church, and allowing them to have power, but not the amount they had before where they would also be involved in national affairs. -
Napoleon creates the Napoleonic Code
Napoleon's law system, which took away many injustices, but also limited people's freedom. -
Napoleon Crowns himself King of France
In a purple velvet robe, Napoleon walks down the Notre Dame Cathedral, and is crowned by the Pope. -
Napoleon dies after he is banished to St.Helena
Napoleon is first banished to St.Helena, (since he was able to escape the previous island) and there he dies.
