Bread prices doubled
King Louis made many people starve to death because of his spendings. This meant that France was in debt, so they had to get more money by making prices higher. People were already being taxed a lot of money so they could not afford the bread for food. Marie Antoinette is rumoured to have said to this: "Let them eat cake". -
Estate General Meeting
This meeting consisted of the three estates and was held to agree on the new taxes. In the picture you can see it was held in a big place, this being Versailles. -
Establishing the National Assembly
This marks the end of an absolute monarchy. This is because the proposal made in the Estate General was passed and the delegates of the three estates are now known as the National Assembly. This means that they can create laws in the name of every French person -
Bastille Day
This day is now celebrated as a national holiday every year on July 14. On this day people went into the Bastille prison hoping to find weapons and ended up freeing the prisoners after defeating the guards. They then proceeded to parade on the streets celebrating. -
King Louis' Attempt at Escaping
By this point of the revolution, King Louis and his family wanted to run away. They planned to do so by going to the Australian Netherlands. The were caught and this increased their number of enemies. He was later executed. -
Approving the Constitutional Monarchy
The King kept power but ended up giving some to the Legislative Assembly. They had the power to reject war declarations and and create laws. -
The Legislative Assembly Declared War
Several countries like Austria and Prussia were in favor of giving King Louis absolute power again. Because of this, France started a war against them. -
Citizens Invade Tuileries
Around 20,000 citizens of France entered the Tuileries Palace in search of the royal family. They ended up imprisoning the King, Queen and their children. -
Enemies Join the War
Countries like Great Britain, Spain and Holland joined Austria and Prussia to defeat France. Because of this, France had to reinforce their army. -
Fearing Robespierre
Everyone who formed part of the National Convention feared Robespierre's power. He was a very influential person in the whole revolution.
