French and Indian War
France and Britain fighting over land for colonies in the Americas. While Britain won, the country was left with many war debts, leading to financial crisis. To fix this, Britain decided to pass acts to tax their colonies. -
The Sugar Act
Description: Raised prices on imports from the Caribbean, and stamping out smuggling.
Reaction: Colonists were angered, and began to protest. -
The Stamp Act
Description: All printed/paper products had to carry a stamp that was taxed.
Reaction: The stamp act congress was created to boycott, and street acts were organized mostly by the sons of liberty. -
The Declaratory Act
Description: The threat of taxation, not necessarily saying they want to tax the colonists, but instilling that they could.
Reaction: Anger, the act was seen as something promising more taxation in the future. -
The Townshend Act
Description: Enforced taxes on glass, lead, paint, paper, and tea.
Reaction: Response included boycotts of British goods, and action from the daughters of liberty. -
The Tea Act
Description: Offered tax exemption on tea from the British East India Company.
Reaction: The Boston Tea Party, dressed as Indians, colonists dumped the equivalent of 4 million dollars of tea into the Boston Harbor. -
