French and Indian War 1754-1763
France and Englan had fought in the war. George Washington was the American hero that started the french and indian war. This war was fought over territories. By 1760 the british had won the war and taken Canada from the French. -
Treaty of Paris 1763
This treaty had officialy ended the French and Indian war. This treaty stated that the the British had claimed all land east of the missiasippi river. British colonist began to settle in the ohio river valley. -
Proclomation of 1763
This was established by the english that prevent the colonist from settling west of the Appalachians. British government had begun to get angry because colonist did not want to pay for pretection. This had been the first time colonist had hostility toward mother england. -
Sugar Act 1764
A British tax placed on colonial goods after the French and indian war. It was placed to help pay off British war dept. The Britsh hoped that the act would force colonistd to sell heir goods to Britain as opposed to selling to other countries. -
Stamp Act 1765
This act passed a tax on all official paper goods. Some such as legal document, wills, deeds, newspapers, etc.. The result of this was the Stamp Act congress formed to organize boycott. it eventually repealed. -
Quartering Act 1765
This Act was established to save the British government money. It had allowed soldiers the right to exept room and board from colonists in America. It required colonial assemlies to provide housing, food, and drinks to the British troops stationed in their towns. -
Writs of Assistance 1767
This British ppolicy was established allowing Customs Officers the right to search and ship at any time without probable cause. Few colonist were affected, but merchants felt this was an invasion of privacy. -
Townshend Acts 1767
This act was passed by the british parliament to cast a tax on all house hold goods. Such as paper, glass, lead, silk, and tea. Result: Colonist boycott through the nonimpotation agreement. -
Boston Massacre 1770
Crispuus Attucks was among the men that had been killed during this battle. Paul Revere helped creat the engraving for the Bosten massacre. The Britsh had ended up killing 5 civilean men. -
Tea Act 1773
This act was placed to officialy tax tea. Tea merchannts in the colonies were cut out of the tea trade because the British East India Company lowered their tea prices. -
Boston Tea Party 1773
The Sons of Liberty dumped 90,000 pounds of tea into the Boston Harbor. The colonist dressed as indians. The resolt to this act was the intolerable Acts. -
Intolerable Acts 1774
Colonis could not hold town meetings with this act. Port of Boston was now closed. The result to this was the first Continental Congress meets. also colonies began to unify. -
1st Continental Congress 1774
Convention of delegates from 12 british North american colonies that had met a carpenters hall in Philadelphia. This was called in response to the passage of the Coercive Acts. The congress met to consider options. -
Lexington and Concord 1775
British troops had orders to arrest the sons of liberty. Paul Revere galloped warning, "British are coming!" John Parker and 70 Minutemen were waiting to attack. The British overpowered the minutemen. Outside of concord british were forced to retreat by minutemen. -
2nd Continental Congress 1775
Created the Olive Branch Petition to declare their loyalty but to ask for repeal of the Intolerable acts. They established the Continental Army with George Washington. -
Ft. Ticonderoga 1775
It had been conducted by Canadien Michel Chartier de Lotbiniere, Marquis de Lotbiniere during the seven years war. It was of strategic importance during the 18th century colonial conflicts between great britain and France. -
Bunker hill 1775
British had marched up Binker hill to remove the Continental Army. they were instructed, "Don't shoot until you see the whites of there eyes" so they retreated. British had won Bunker hill loosing over 1000 soldiers. -
Common Sense 1776
Thomas Paine wrote Common Sense tryint to change puplic opinion. Paine's arguments helped persuade colonist to fight for independence. -
Declaration of Independence 1776
Writen by Thomas Jefferson. It announced the break up with Great Britain. 5 parts to the delcaration of independence. -
Battle of New York 1776
British wanted to capture New York City. They had attacked washington's army. British had avoided the capture and retreated, the british occupy New York City for the rest of the war, washington was humiliated by the loss. -
Battle of Trenton 1776
Washington launched a surprize attack. He captured over 800 hessian prisoners. Hessian was a German soldiers hired by the british. -
Battle of Princeton 1777
Washington captures another 300 British soldiers at Princeton New Jersy. Washington would then lose the b=Battle of Brandywine and Germantown as a result. -
Battle of Saratoga 1777
Britsh planned to cut off New England from the rest of the colonies. Horatio Gates surrounded Burgoyne's remaining forces at Saratoga. Burgoyne surrendered. This battle was a big turning point in the war. -
Winter at Valley Forge 1777-1778
Washington spent cold winter at valley forge. Troops were in desperate need of food and warm clothing. The french volunteer Marquis de Lafayette to help and train the continental army. -
Battle of Yorktown 1781
Britsh General Lord Cornwallis moved his troops to Virginia. Washington had over 16,000 French and American soldiers ready to fight. Washington leads a three week attack. On Oct. 17, 1781 Cornwallis surrenders and americans gain their independence. -
Treaty of Paris 1783
Great Britain recognized the U.S as an independent nation, the U.S. gained all land east of the mississippi river, and returned all property taken from loyalist.
