    Accused of whistling at white women. Three days later Roy Bryant and others kidnapped him. His eye detached, ear cut off, and bar wire wrapped around his neck.
  • Rosa Parks

    Rosa Parks
    Rosa is arrested for failing to move seats on the bus. She is fined $10. MLKJR and church send out flyers to boycott the bus system on Dec5. - The buses ran empty for 38 days. Supreme Court ruled blacks and whites can sit wherever they want.
  • SCLC

    SCLC
    A meeting of black church pastors to coordinate events for black people. MLK was elected the 1st president of the group. This group used nonviolent strategy and registered blacks to vote.
  • Little Rock 9

    Little Rock 9
    9 black students wanted to go to a white school. The governor of Arkansas called out the National Guard to stop people who opposed the idea. President Eisenhower calls in 1,200 military men to escort these students from home to school.
  • Greensboro Sit-ins

    Go to Wordsworth buy items. Then go sit at the Lunch counter. They are refused service and told to leave but they stayed. Day after day they came back and did the same thing.
  • Freedom Riders

    Freedom Riders
    A diverse group of volunteers from 39 states, most were college students. They arrived in Anniston, Alabama blocked by KKK. Tires slashed, fire bombed, and buses were burned and people were beaten.
  • March on Washington

    March on Washington
    250,000 people marched in Washington D.C.. It was peaceful and respectful protest for jobs and freedom. MLK gave his famous “I have a dream” speech. MLK was the last speaker for the day.

    Black marches wanted to walk 54 miles to Montgomery to register to vote. At the Edmond bridge troopers brutally beat them.

    Assassination of Martin Luther King
    Striking sanitation workers protesting Memphis. Went back to the motel. Shot lower right side of his face with Remington Rifle. James Earl Ray sentenced to 99 years. His death marks the end of the civil rights movement.
