On his visit with his wife to tour Sarajevo Franz Ferdinand was assassinated by Serbia’s secret military called the Black Hand. Ferdinand's assassination is said to be the start of WWI when Austria-Hungary invaded Serbia on July 28th 1914. -
A Christmas Truce
Pope Benedict XV suggests a temporary truce so that the troops can celebrate Christmas but Britain refused. The troops made an unofficial truce when a German and British soldiers wished each other Merry Christmas. Starting on Christmas Eve German soldiers sang Christmas carols and the allies soon joined in on the joyous songs. Some say that a friendly soccer game took place during the truce and both sides used this truce to gather their men that have been dead for months and bury them. -
Lusitania Sinks
The Lusitania a british passenger ship was said to be sunk by the Germans by a torpedo. A total of 1198 die in this explosion many women and children. -
Guardian Angel Edith killed
Edith was a British nurse who saved soldiers in Brussels from all sides. She and many others helped over 200 allied soldiers escape the German occupied Belgium. She was tried and found guilty for assisting men to the enemy and shot by a German Firing squad. -

He enlisted in the 175th Overseas battalion which was joined with The Canadian Expeditionary Force (CEF). Went to England with the battalion as a Sergeant. -
The Battle of Verdun
This battle was the longest battle ever fought in WWI and it was because of how many men the French army was losing that the rest of the allies decided to make a distraction and that distraction was called the Battle of Somme. It is estimated that France lost 360,000 men and Germany lost 340,000 men in this battle that lasted months. -

This battle started because of the Battle of Verdun it was a distraction so that the German would be preoccupied on both sides and give the French fighting some release. Lasted between June 1st to November 1st one of the largest battles fought in WWI with the allies and the central powers losing over 1.5 million soldiers. The allies predicted this battle would last a few days not months. -

Zimmerman Telegram
The Zimmerman telegram which was sent to Mexico from Germany saying that they were going to attack the US with unrestricted submarine warfare. It was interfered by teh British who decoded the message. They were promising to give Mexico back the land that the US took from them. It said that Mexico should make an alliance with Germany and with Japan as soon as war is certain. It was signed as Zimmerman. -

Treaty of Versailles
It is made up of 440 articles which was divided into 15 parts which talked about the league of nations, military liimits, prisoners of war, finances, and reparations, etc. The treaty puts all the blame on Germany and they have to pay for damages done during war. Germany would not be able to have submarines or air force and only a navy of 6 ships and army of 100,000 men. Hermann Müller and Johannes Bell signed the Versailles Treaty in the Hall of Mirrors in the Palace of Versailles. -

He died on January 2nd 1949 in Calgary a city in Alberta, Canada. He was 52 years old.
