    Frederick Law Olmsted was born in Hartford, Conneticut on April 26, 1822. His father, John Olmsted, was a wealthy businessman and his mother was a farmer's son.     Olmsted was about to enter at Yale University, as he had graduated from Philips Academy in 1838, but he was infected with Sumac Poisoning, which affected his eyes and ended his plans of going to college.

  • Olmsted Removed From Central Park For First Time

    In 1860, Olmsted was removed from the management of Central Park due to politics, as he was backed by the Republicans and his removal was in part because of the Democratic party, who replaced him with Andrew Haswell Green. Andrew Haswell Green was not skilled or experienced in the profession, but he did help cut costs and he also secured the deal for the purchase of an extra 65 acres, which were to be the "rugged undergrowth" part of the park.

    While Olmsted was also in charge of the grounds he and Daniel Burnham were largely responsible for the entire look and design of the fair, which came to be known as the White City. The over all design was based on the Beaux Arts movement and was also influenced, and in turn influenced the City Beautiful movement.
