George Washington
George Washington is a young military officer that fought against the French. Both sides wanted to control the west of the Appalachian Mountains. Britain and france were the two strongest powers in Europe. -
Tuscarora
Other groups of conquered by the Iroquois. Tuscarora joined in 1722. The English referred to confederacy as the Six Nations. Iroquois managed to remian independent by trading with both the British and the French. -
Pickawillany
The French and Britains forces grew quickly. British fur traders built a fort at a place called Pickawillany. The French came and drove the British traders out to Ohio. French also raided many other places. -
Iroquois
The Iroquois came under greater pressure as the British moved to the Ohio Valley. Finally the leaders of the confederacy gave certain trading rights to the British and reluctantly became their allies. -
Governor Robert Dinwiddie
Governor Robert Dinwiddie of Virginia sent a surveyor named George Washington into the Ohio counrty. Washington was 21 years old, his mission was to tell the french that they were trespassing on land that Great Britian claimed. -
Ohio river
In the spring Dinwiddle made Waashington a lieutenant colonel. He then sent Washington back to Ohio country with a militia. The militia had intructions to build a fort where the Allegheny and Monongahela Rivers meet to form the Ohio river. -
The Albany Plan of Union
Represenatives from severalmcolonies met in Albany, New York, to discuss the threat of war. They wanted to find a way to defend themselvesagainst the French. They also hoped to persuade the Iroquois to support the British.
