Britain and Frace were two of the strongest powers in Europe. They compeated for wealth and empie in different parts of the world. This rivelry caused strong feelings between British and French colonists in North America. -

Six Nations
The confederacy included five nations- The Mohawk, Seneca, Cayuga, Onondaga, and Oneida. Other groups of Native Americans later joined or were conqured by the Iroquois. After the Tuscarora joined the English referred to the confederacy as the Six Nations. -
Rivilery Grew
Unfriendly like conduct between the two grew. British fur traders built a fort in Pickawillany. The French acted quickly and attacked the fort, sending the British traders out of Ohio. The French also began raiding towns in Maine and New York. -
Giving Trading Rights to the British
The Iroquois came under greater pressure as the British moved into the Ohio Valley. Eventually the leaders of the confederacy gave certain trading rights to the British and became their allies. By doing this the Iroquois upest the balence of power between the French and British that had been dificult to develop. -
George Washington
Governor Robert Dinwiddie of Virginia sent George Washington, who was 21 years old to the Ohio country. His mission was to tell the French that they were trespassing on land that Great Britian clamied.He demanded that they leave. -
Washington's First Command
Dinwiddie made Washington a lieutenant colonel. He then sent George Washington back to the Ohio Country with a militia of 150 men. They had instruction to build a fort where the Allegheny and Monongahela Rivers met to form the Ohio River. When they arrived there to build they found the French already building Fort Duquesne on that land. -
Albany Plan of Union
Several coloines met in Albany, New York to discuss the threat of war. They wanted to defend themselves against the French. They also hoped to presuade the Iroquois to support the British.
