The Iroquois Confederacy
The Iroquois Confederacy was made up of five nations- Mohawk, Seneca, Cayuga, Onondaga, Oneida, and other groups. After the Tuscarora joined in 1722, they were named the Six Nations. -
The Rivalry Grows
British fur traders built a fort in in Pickawillany then the French attacked and drove the traders out of Ohio. French troops raided towns in Maine and New York so some New Englanders took captive of the French fort at Louisbourg. They were so unhappy, Britain returned Louisburg. -
British Arrives in Ohio Valley
Mid-1700s the British moved into the Ohio Valley. The confederacy was nervous, but they gave guidelines and made allies with them. That changed the balance of power between the British annd French. -
George Washington
The governor of Virginia sent Gearge Washington to the Ohio area to tell the french they were trespassing on the british's land. He had to force them to leave, but that failed. -
Washington's First Command
Dinwiddie made Washington a lieutenant colonel and sent him to Ohio with a militia to build a fort. The French were already building a fort there so he built one nearby called Fort Necessity. They attacked the French, then were forced to surrender. Washington was famous in the colonies and Europe. He was a hero! -
The Albany Plan of Union
Colonies came together to discuss the threat of war. They wanted to defend themselves from the French. They also wanted the Iroqois to help. They wanted to create one government for all the colonies. They approved the plan but didn't want to give up the powers. The Albany meeting failed to unite and then started the French and Indian war.
