Fort sumter
Even though it was owned by the North the South ended up winning that battle. Local Southerners thought it was a firework show. -
Battle of Bull run
The Norht thought this was going to be the last battle and the war was going to be over. Rich people from the North sat on the rolling hills with picnic baskets to watch the battle. In the begining the Union was winning, but more of the confederacy came on trains. Then "Stonewall' Jackson began screaming. Others joined in and they were encouraged to keep fighting. The south ended up winning. This scream is known as the rebel yell. -
Battle of Antietam
Robert E. Lee thought by winning on Maryland's territorry they would side with the south. Since new weapons were being made there was more death, 6,000 dead and over 20,00 wounded. In one day. No side really won, but Abraham took it as a victory for the North so he could send out the emancipation proclamation. -
Battle of gettysburg
Robert E. Lee neded to win because the South was running out of supplies. The South lost, big time. 50,000 died, North and South combinded. -
Siege of Vicksburg
The North was ready to end this, so Abraham Lincoln created the anaconda strategy. Coil, Crush, Bite. They surrounded the South, on land the Mississippi river and soldiers, out in the ocean north had steal ships harbored. They only place not surrounded was the town of Vicksburg. At Vicksbrug they fought 40+ days. The North won.
