U2 Spy Plane Incident
A US U2 spy plane was shot by the Soviet union, but the pilot survived and was captured. At first, the president of the US denied that it was a spy plane, but later confessed to the Soviets. Civil Rights Act

1980 Olympic Boycott
President Jimmy Carter issued an ultimatum that the US would boycott the 1980 Moscow Summer Olympics. The only way that the US would not boycott the Olympics was if the Soviet troops would withdraw from Afghanistan in one month.
