    Vietnam War Begins
    Fearing the spread of communism and the "domino affect" the United States head to war in Vietnam to try and prevent the spread of communism. The U.S. supported South Vietnam which was a weak country but had a non-communist government. The U.S. was not going to allow for communism to spread any further in Vietnam.

    Heart Break Hotel
    Elvis Presley begins his career with "Sun Records" in 1954 where he met Colonel Tom Parker who became Elvis's manager. Elvis Presley went on to make his hit single, "Heartbreak Hotel" which eventually led to him becoming vastly known as the "King of Rock and Roll".

    The Beatles
    The Beatles is formed with John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Star. Together these 4 guys set out to become the most commercially successful act in all of music. They became known as "The Fab Four" and had their first album, "Please Please Me", in 1963.

    Govenor George Wallace
    Gov. George Wallace stands to prevent integration of the University of Alabama by blocking the entrance to the Foster Auditorium. He refused to let the two black students, Vivian Malone and James Hood, enter the building. He tried to prevent their enrollment of the school.

    March on Washington
    African Americans march on washington igniting the Civil Rights Movement. 250,000 people attended. Martin Luther King Jr. attended and spoke out against segregation and that all people are equal regardless of your backround or skin complexion. This was the biggest demonstration that occured at the capital and was televised.

    Black Panther Party Formed
    A black revolutionary socialist group founded by Huey P. Newton. The party believed that violence is justified by self-defense. They came up with the "Ten Point Program" which listed their wants for equal rights. It spoke of being treated equally. Although they wanted equal rights they wanted black men to be exempt from any American military service.

    Sesame Street
    One of the first shows that producers ever used education goals, and a curriculum to design the show. The show was aimed towards educating children in a way they'd enjoy. It was the first preschool educational program that ever aired on television.
  • Hurricane Carmen

    Hurricane Carmen
    Hurricane Carmen was a devastating tropical hurricane that started in Africa and made its way to the U.S.. It was a category 4 hurricane by the time it made it's way to Texas and Louisiana. The hurricane killed 8 people and cause $162 million in damages.

    Vietnam War Ends
    Vietnam War ends as the longest actual war the U.S. has ever been involved in. President Nixon began to withdraw troops after intiating bombing in North Vietnam. The U.S. declared a cease fire and leaves South Vietnam also leaving behind POW's. North Vietnam went on to win the war against South Vietnam.

    Elvis Presley's Death
    Elvis dies in sleep next to his girlfriend. Elvis was rushed to "Baptist Memorial Hospital" where he was announced dead on arrival.
  • Death of John Lennon

    Death of John Lennon
    A decade after The Beatles broke up John Lennon was shot and killed by Mark David Chapman in the building he lived in New York City.

    HIV
    HIV came to light. HIV is a sexually transmitted virus that leads to AIDS and can be fatal. It has no known cure and has resulted in many deaths worldwide.
