This case is the first ever case to use forensic entomology. The case took place in China after the victim had been slashed repeatedly with a sickle. A sickle is a common tool used in rice harvesting, the murder couldn't be easily identified since all workers used sickles. The local magistrate (a civil officer) gathered all the workers to lay out their sickles, all of them appeared to seem clean, until one sickle started attracting hordes of flies. The murder later confessed to the crime.
