    The American Revolution

    The American Revolution was the overall effect of multiple things the British had done 'wrong' to the Colonists, such as heavy/unnecessary taxing, quarting of soldiers, no say in Parliament, many Acts inflicted upon the colonistrs, neglect from the King, massacre of citizens (i.e.:The Boston Massacre), and other issues. The war ended when the British surrendered at Yorktown and the Treaty of Paris was created.

    Washington's Farewell Address
    Washington gave this address at the end of his term as President. He warned not to form political parties, to not get involved with foreign influences/policies, and not to let a President run for more than two four year terms.

    Barbary War (First)

    The first Barbary War took place in the Barbary States over in Northeren Africa. Shortly after America declared independence, their ships were attacked along the Barbary coasts. In 1801 the U.S. defeated troops/attacks from different Barbary States. The war ended when the U.S. made a treaty with Tripoli.

    The Embargo Act
    The Embargo was written by the United States against the countries of Britain and France, who had been violating U.S. neutrality. However, when the act was signed into law, it turned out to ruin the U.S. economy and have devestating harships on the American people.

    War of 1812
    The War of 1812 occured between Britian and the United States. The causes of the war were that Britian tried to limit the amount of trade the U.S. has, captured and impressed U.S. sailors, and the fact that the United States wanted to expand its influence.

    Manifest Destiny

    Manifest Destiny was the expansion of U.S. citizens westward, further into unknown territories. Other people they ran into, such as Mexicans and Native Americans, were viewed as "backward" and needed to become more civiled and part of the modern day American society. In short, U.S. citizens took land from the groups of people who previously inhabited the area.

    Barbary War (Second)

    Starting in 1815, the U.S. again went to war with the nations that belonged to the Barbary States. The U.S. had the oppurtunity to send a full squad of ships/troops to comence force against the Algiers, who had been capturing and holding U.S. citizens for ransom.
  • The Monroe Doctrine

    The Monroe Doctrine
    This doctrine was written by James Monroe. It read: The U.S. would not get involved with European Affairs, the U.S. couldn't interfere with previously existing European colonies, European countries could not under any circumstances create new colonies in the Americas (Western Hemisphere), and if any European countries attempted to create new colonies, the U.S. would view it as a hostile action against the country (go to war with said European country).

    U.S.Mexican War

    The U.S. Mexican War occurred during a time period known as the Manifest Destiny, in which American citizens were extending their influence further west into the country. While they were doing that, they were pushing other groups of people, including Mexicans, out of their currently inhabited regions. The Mexican people refused to give up their land and when the U.S. citizens refused as well, Mexico and the United States went to war. The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo ended the U.S. Mexican War.

    Annexation of Hawaii
    The Hawaiian Islands provided the United States with many benefits, even previous to the annexation itself. It had products that U.S. merchants could buy and sell and allowed the U.S. to expand its influence into the Pacific. When the U.S. and Spain went to war, the U.S. quickly annexed Hawaii for naval purposes. In 1959, Hawaii was made the fiftieth state in the U.S.

    Spanish-American-Cuban War

    This war was between America and Spain, who at the time was very wealthy and powerful. Spain was mad at America who interviened in the Cuban War of Independence to help them win and America's attacks on Spain's pocessions in the Pacific led Spain and America to fight eachother on mulitple occasions, mainly in Cuba and the Phillipines.

    Roosevelt Corollary
    The Roosevelt Corollary was created around 1904 by President Theodore Roosevelt, as an edit to the Monroe Doctorine. While the Monroe Doctorine warned against other nations trying to annex the Americas, the Roosevelt Corollary took a more firm stance by stating that they will protect Latin American countries. It was mostly done to keep European nations from having the oppurtunity to invade the States and to stabilize the countries.

    Isolationism

    The United States were almost the definition of isolationism from the time they became a country up until the 1900's. The country slowly came out of it's neutral self when U.S. women/men were captured, harmed, or killed by other nations at conflict for no apparent reason. For example, the U.S. entered WWI after the bombing of the Lusitania, and entered WWII when Pearl Harbor was bombed by the Japenese in 1941.

    World War I

    There were many underlying causes to World War I. The four main ones, however, were militarism, nationalism, imperilism, and alliences amoung European countries.The 'excuse' for the war starting was the assassination of the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife Sophie by Gavrilo Princip, a Serbian. When Germany backed Austria-Hungary and declared war, it went downhill for all of the countries. WWI ended witht the Treaty of Versailles.

    World War II

    There were a few main causes of WWII, however the main reasons were associated with Germany. The Treaty of Versailles left Germany with all the blame and debt from WWI. So when Hitler rose, he convienced the Germans to not pay the debt and to cast aside the Treaty. When Hitler began invading countries in Europe and made alliences with other countries, along with murdering thousands of people, the second world war started. The war ended when Japan surrendered (known as VJ Day).
  • The Truman Doctorine

    The Truman Doctorine
    The Truman Doctorine, which is linked to the Marshall Plan, both created by President Truman, was the promise to help any country with the threat of communism looming over them. Truman could promise this because of his $600 million pledge that would be put towards stopping communism. This was after WWII but previous to the Cold War, when Americans lived in fear of the domino theory. This theory was said that neighboring countries would fall to surrounding countries who had adapted communism.

    The Cold War

    The Cold War was between the United States and the Soviet Union. It started happening right after WWII ended. The U.S. didn't like how the S.U.'s leaders ran the country nor how they were communist. There was no blood shed directly between the two countries; it consisted of the Space Race, atomic bomb testing, the Red Scare, and wars/battles between countries backed by the U.S. or S.U.

    The Marshall Plan

    The Marshall Plan was created by President Truman after World War II ended, around the time that communism came to the Soviet Union. The plan pledged $600 million to fighting communism, which included aiding other countries in the fight against it.

    The Vietnam War

    The Vietnam War took place between North and South Vietnam. The U.S. backed South Vietnam and Communist China and Soviet Union backed North Vietnam. Many Americans didn't approve of the war, so the U.S. was a divided country. Many soldiers and Vietnamese citizens died.

    Detente

    Detente can be translated to mean "relaxation". This time period was known by this because it takes place in the middle of the Cold War, when treaties between the Soviet Union and the United States began to be created. This relieved tenisions world wide and between the two countries.

    Carter's Emphasis on Foriegn Policy

    Jimmy Carter, 39th President of the United States, had a completely different view on foreign policy than previous presidents. He believed that America's foreign policy should be based on the country's morals and that joining a war on inflicting violence/threat on a country is not the correct way to go. So, with that thought, his first act that he ever did was cutting the country's defense budget by $6 billion dollars and seizing nuclear weapons from multiple countries and the trend continued.

    September 9, 2001
    On September 11, 2001, two airplanes that were hijacked by a specific group of Muslim terrosists were driven into the World Trade Center, also known as the Twin Towers. It killed thousands of American citizens and killed more as the buildings collapsed. Another plane hit the Pentagon and one crashed in a field in Pennsylvania. This event set off wars over in the Middle East a year or so later.

    War in Iraq/Afghanistan/Global War on Terror

    These wars can be linked together in the end. The war in Afghanistan was mainly focused hunting down the people in charge of the 9/11 terrorist attacks that had taken place in the U.S. The war in Iraq was over the fact that they (Iraq) had broken a previous treaty that had been created and had multiple powerful and nuclear weapons in their pocession.
  • Engagment

    Engagment
    Engagement is a wider range of specific practices of contact between other countries, including whether a country goes to war or attempts a "peace talk" or a treaty with another country. Engagement has been used by President Obama a lot resently, including multiple peace talks with countries in the Middle East versus a war over certain issues like in the past.
