Treaty of Alliance
This was a Treaty that encouraged trade between France and the new nation of the United States. It also formed an alliance with France against Great Britian. -
Washington wins reelection with no opposition
For the second presidential election, George Washington won because no one ran against him. George Washington wanted to retired but agreed to serve one more term. -
Neutrality Proclamation of 1793
When Britian and France went to war in 1793 the United States knew they could not afford to help because they had no money since they were a new country. So in order not to take sides with either country President Washington declared America's neutrality with the Neutrality Proclamation of 1793. -
The Jay Treaty of 1794
A treaty made with Britian after the Revolutionary War to reduce tensions. It helped keep America and Britian from going into another war. -
Pinckney's Treaty of 1795
Allowed navigation of the Mississippi River by Americans. It also allowed transportation of good through New Orleans to be duty free. Gave both Spain and the US protection from Indians. -
John Adams defeated Thomas Jefferson
John Adams won the second presidential election barely over Thomas Jefferson. The nation was split in the voting. The Southern states voted for Jefferson and the Northern states voted for Adams. Because of how it was written in the Constitution, Jefferson was made Adams' Vice-President. -
French seize American merchant ships
The french thought that we broke a treaty with them and became angry with us. In 1796 they started capturing our merchant ships. John Adams sent people to France to calm them down. -
George Washington retired as President
George Washington did not want to be President for a third term. His health was not great and he was ready to enjoy some quiet time at his home in Mount Vernon. He also wanted to set an example by showing two terms is long enough for a President. -
Congress expanded army and authorized small navy
Because of the XYZ affair, Congress decided to increase the size of the army and create a navy to fight the French. Unfortunately this made Americans angry because they had to put taxes on stamps and land. -
Alien and Sedition Acts
This act gave the president the power to arrest and deport non-citzens that spoke badly about the government. Defendants had to prove their innocence. -

Virginia and Kentucky resolutions
These resolutions stated the Alien and Sedition were not consititutional. The resolutions almost broke up the union. Thomas Jefferson wrote the Kentucky Resolution first which passed in November and James Madison wrote the Virginia resolution which passed in December. -
Election of 1800
Thomas Jefferson and Aaron Burr were both running for president. The votes were tied . Alexander Hamilton had to make the decision on who would be the next president and he chose Jefferson. -
Aaron Burr shot Alexander Hamilton
Because Alexander Hamilton chose Thomas Jefferson over Aaron Burr, Burr challenged Hamilton to a duel. Hamilton and Burr did not get along in politics or personally. During the duel, Burr killed Hamilton and after he finished his term as Jefferson's Vice-President, he never was elected to another office.
