Potter Mania
Age 6, my mother’s favorite English professor sends me a copy of the first Harry Potter book. My dad, also interested in reading it, reads the book aloud to me. We read books 1-3 together before I pick up the fourth book on my own and begin reading. -
And so it begins...
In third grade, one of my favorite teachers encourages me to read by suggesting books his daughter read a couple of years before me at my age. Then, he tells me to set a goal for myself of earning 1000 AR points by reading as many different books in the library as possible. -
Reading Frenzy
Never reading the same book twice, in third and fourth grade, I attempt the 1000 points. However, I only collect a few hundred those years. By fifth grade, I finally achieved my goal. -
A Whole New World
Fifth grade was is the year I begin to notice what genre of books I enjoy reading the most. I am obsessed with Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter. Anything fantastical was fascinating. -
Poetic Musings
In middle school, my reading frenzy declines due to the small, poorly stocked shelves of the library, but I begin my analytical journey of studying literature with some amazing teachers. During this time, I read poetry that I still remember bits and pieces of today, poems such as My Heart Leaps Up, Success Is Counted Sweetest, Two Roads Diverged in a Yellow Wood, Flanders Fields, and the Jabberwocky. -
End to an Era
In high school, I finally finish the Harry Potter series and collect the last book with my dad by my side at the midnight release. -
Challenge Accepted
My favorite class in high school is AP Language because my teacher discusses amazing literary works with us. I fall in love with works such as Brave New World, the Once and Future King, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s nest, and more. -
It is a truth universally acknowledged...
During high school, I also gain interest in Jane Austen works. My dad buys me the entire collection in one hardcover copy. I have yet to read them all, but I love that I have all of her novels at my disposal whenever I get the chance to read them. -
The One Bright Book of Life
In college, three of my literature classes were extraordinary and exposed me to so many wonderful novels. I discovered that my passion is more for novels even though I do enjoy poetry from time to time. -
Neverending Journey
My favorite English college class is American Lit taught by Professor Pizzino, and my favorite novel in the class is As I Lay Dying. This class is amazing because the discussions are so in depth and Pizzino allows us to really express our thoughts while providing us with the most interesting and insightful questions. I love As I Lay Dying because no matter how many times you read it, you will gain new and different perspective. That’s what makes reading enjoyable, the adventure of it.
