    World War I had an interesting affect on the American food. Since the country was in severe depression, the food availability was scarce. Self- serve super markets were introduced. People in 1910 formed meals suggested by a cook book. Advances in technology moved quickly. Lastly, commercial food manufacturers flourished.

    1920's

    the 1920's was a fascinating time for food. There was a no alcohol sentiment, exotic culinary experimentation, social nutrition movements, vegetarian alternatives, and since the prohibition stopped the legal sale of alcohol in the country, the soft drink production went up.

    1930's

    the 1930's was a period of cutting back, not starvation. There was an inexpensive food supply. People who struggled to get food on the table had alternate options. less grades of meat, manufactured substitutes, etc. People who needed extended help were helped by private soup kitchens and government programs. "Penny restaurants" were made in order to provide soup for the unemployed.

    Rationing is a big part of the 1940's. Making do with less to get by was a strategy people had to learn quick. Cookbooks and magazines were full of ideas for stretching food supplies. People needed to ration food because the soldiers fighting in WWII needed food. Farmers played a role in growing food for military needs. Victory Gardens were made by homeowners to support the military.

    1950's

    Simple meals prepared from pre-packaged goods were popular in the 1950's. The 1950's marked the beginning of ethnic foods. GIs returning from tours in Europe developed new tastes. Popular foods from the 1950's include; fruit cup, chex mix, salted almonds, cheese balls, Pastry snails, and much more! American homeowners had to be convinced to buy pre-packaged foods, yet it didn't take much convincing.
