    To meet the growing urban demand caused by population shifts. Food producers increased output. They used methods of mass production to for food.This caused concern for food safety and quality and preserving it. All this contributed to the Pure Food and Drug Act of 1906
  • The Great Depression

    The Great Depression
    While the economic fallout of The Great Depression was felt throughout the U.S it also affected American agriculture greatly. The depression and the dust bowl occurred during the same time period. Which had a big impact on farming. So new was of getting and making food was very big in this time period.
  • WWI and WWII

    WWI and WWII
    The World Wars required citizens to temporarily change their ways of eating.Changes the transformed the American diet and food system. During WWI the government encouraged the consumption of more fresh foods like eggs and dairy products. During WWII eating pre-packed food became a huge thing. Also things like spam and dehydrated potatoes were often given to soldiers.
  • The Counterculture

    The Counterculture
    Counter cuisine was food that wasn't mainstream. Some of these things still eat today while others fell off. Things that were seen as super healthy was counter cuisine. Like granola or tofu as well as organic foods. These things became big because of concerns about ecology, green living, and global warming.

    Food,nutrients and health became fused in the American diet. When the US Department of Agriculture and Health and Human Services published the first Dietary Guidelines for Americans. The guidelines contributed to the awareness of the connections between eating bad and getting disease. Which promoted nutrients rather than whole foods.
