In 1868, the U.S govermment made a agreement, called a treaty, with the Sioux.Thet promised to leave the Black Hills as part of the Sioux territort -
Gold was found!
The U.S. govermment broke their promise to the Sioux. During the 1870's, gold was discoverd in the Black Hills. Miners dug up the the sacred area in search of more gold. The U.S. govermment took the Black Hills away from the Sioux. -
The Defeat
In 1890, the Army defeated the Sioux and the U.S. govermment claimed the Black Hills. Thirty-seven years later, sculptors started carving Mount Rushmore. -
The first Memmorial day
On June 4th, 1926, the U.s. congress passed a formal statement that said people should honor vetran of world war 1 every november 11 the day WW1 ended. -

In 1954 , the 83rd U.S. Congress rewrote an erlier law that made Armistice Day a legal holiday. Congress chanfed the word
"Armistice" to "Vertrans:" to honor all veterans of all wars. -
President Dwight D. Eisehower
On June 1st, 1954, Presiden Deiht D. Eisehower signed the law, and November 11 became a day to honor all Amarican verans of all wars.
