Michael Strank
Sergeant 2nd Battalion, 28th Marines 5th Marine Division
Strank joined the Marines in October of 1939. He was assigned to the Marine Corps Recruit Depot on Parris Island. he participated in the Battle of Bougainville from November 1 until January 12, 1944 with a Marine Raider unit. On February 14 his Marine Raider unit disbanded. He took part in landing on Iwo Jima on February 19, 1945. -

Pharmacist's Mate Second Class assigned Easy Company of 2d Battalion, 28th Marines, 5th Marine Division.
Joined the navy at age 19 to avoid frontline combat. Although he was assighed to the Marines on Iwo Jima. Forty men Easy Company successfully climbed up Mount Suribachi captured the summit and raised the first American flag. Hours later he was present for the sencond flag raising. Six men successfullly raised the larger replacement flag. this flag is seen in popular culture. -

1st Headquarters Battalion, 5th Marine Division
On December 2, 1942, He joined Bravo ompany, 3rd Parachute Battalion, 3rd Marine Division.The 3rd battalion went to Guadalcanal. On December 4, he landed with the 3rd battalion on Bougainville. On February 23, Marines from the 3rd Platoon of Easy Company captured and raised the American flag on Mount Suribachi. -
Harlon Block
On November 15, 1943, he served as a member of Headquarters and Service Company, 1st Marine Parachute Regiment. On December 21, he landed on Bougainville. Block landed on Iwo Jima on February 19, 1945. He was part of the second American flag raising on February 23, 1945. -
Rene Gagnon
Corporal 2nd Battalion 28th Marines 5th Marine Division
Gagnon landed with the 28th Marines on the southeast side closest to Mount Suribachi on the southern end of Iwo Jima. Gagnon was part of the six men that successfullly raised the larger replacement flag. This flag is seen in popular culture. -
