    Horace Mann was secretary of the education board in Massachusetts and enacted commons schools where all kids could get an education. He also posted "The Common School Journal" for all to learn about common schools.
  • Compulsory School Attendance Law

    Compulsory School Attendance Law
    In Massachusetts, the law was passed that required children to attend primary school. Those in non-compliance faced fees and penalties. This helped enforce students to attend school.
  • Kalamazoo School Case

    Kalamazoo School Case
    In Kalamazoo, MI, three men without children didn't want to pay the new tax for high school education. The Michigan Supreme Court ruled it was for the betterment of all to have public schools. Other states soon followed.
  • Brown v. Board of Education

    Brown v. Board of Education
    In Topeka, Kansas, an African-American family wanted their daughter to go to a white school due to better education standards. Their case went up to the Supreme Court, which ruled "Separate but Equal" is unlawful, abolishing segregated schools. This allows for kids of all colors to have equal schooling standards.

    Formerly known as the "Education for All Handicapped Children Act" signed by President Ford, this allows for all those with special needs to have a free public education with an accommodating environment. This was a huge driving force for Special Education.
