    The Library of Congress is the largest library in the world, containing millions of books, recordings, photographs, newspapers, maps and manuscripts. It is the main source of research and information for the U.S. Congress and home of the U.S. Copyright Office. The Library of Congress is also the oldest federal cultural institution in the United States.

    Thomas Jefferson was the 3rd President of the United States. He was a Democratic-Republican, and had 2 terms as President. Jackson´s Presidency lasted from 1801 to 1809. One of his many accomplishments was making the Louisiana Purchase. One of his flaws as a President was signing the Embargo Act, directly affect U.S. involvement in the War of 1812.
  • Louisiana Purchase

    Louisiana Purchase
    Thomas Jefferson negotiates with France and purchases the Louisiana Territory for $15 million. The Louisiana Territory was 827,000 square miles and expanded from the Mississippi River to the Rocky Mountains. France sold it to the U.S. for 3 cents per acre, which was an extremely good deal for the time.
  • Lewis and Clark Expedition Began

    Lewis and Clark Expedition Began
    Lewis and Clark set off from St. Louis Missouri to explore the west and find a route to the Pacific Ocean. It took 2 years to do, lasting from May 14, 1804 to September 23, 1806. The expedition was the first American expedition to cross the western half of the United States.
  • The War of 1812 Begins

    The War of 1812 Begins
    U.S. declares war on Great Britain because of British impressment of American seamen. James Madison was President during this conflict. The war lasted from June 18, 1812 to February 18, 1815. Depending on who you ask, a case can be made as either an American victory or a British victory. The war ended with the signing of the treaty of Ghent on December 24, 1814 in Belgium.

    James Monroe was a Democratic-Republican who became the 5th President of the United States. His two-term Presidency lasted from 1817 to 1825. One of his greatest achievements was the Monroe Doctrine, which was considered a defining moment in U.S. foreign policy. However, Monroe tried and failed to stop the slave trade.

    Andrew Jackson of the Republican Party became the 7th U.S. President and served for 2 terms from 1829 to 1837. Before becoming President, Jackson gained fame by being a general in the army and serving both houses of congress. He was the type of man that either you liked him and supported him, or you hated him and wanted him gone. One of his major accomplishments was leading U.S. forces in the Creek War against Native Americans.

    Andrew Jackson signed the Indian Removal Act on May 28, 1830. The act authorized the forced removal of Indians living in the eastern part of the country to lands west of the Mississippi River. This act also led to the creation of the Indian Removal Act.
  • The Trail of Tears Opens

    The Trail of Tears Opens
    The Trail of Tears was when Cherokee Native Americans from Georgia, North Carolina, Alabama, Tennessee, and Florida were forcefully moved from their grounds. Then they were moved to specially designated territories on the west side of the Mississippi River. The Cherokee people were not given enough time to gather their belongings, so 4,000 of them died of cold, hunger, and disease on their way to the western lands.

    John Tyler was a member of the Whig Party, and served as President for 1 term from 1841 to 1845. He was the first Vice President to become President after a death. One of his accomplishments was the 1845 annexation of Texas. He ran for Vice President and put himself down in the Whig Party on his ticket. However, when he became President, the Whig Party tried to impeach him!
