    NAACP - CIVIL RIGHTS
    On February 12, the NAACP was founded. It stands for National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. It fought for African American civil rights and helped many to gain more rights.
  • Kristallnacht - WORLD WAR II

    Kristallnacht - WORLD WAR II
    Kristallnacht was an event where Nazi soldiers encouraged mobs to attack Jewish communities. Many were killed and over 30,000 Jews were arrested. Later on, Jews did not have to worry about this type of persecution.
  • France and Britain Declare War - WORLD WAR II

    France and Britain Declare War - WORLD WAR II
    On September 3, 1939, France and Britain declared war on Germany. This was a response to Hitler's invasion of Poland. Not long after this, Poland fell. After this, Poland was reorganized under the government known as the communist Provisional Government.

    During the Battle of Britain, the nation was defended by the royal air force. As a result, Germany was never able to launch the land invasion they had originally planned on Great Britain. This altered the war.

    In 1940, Paris, France surrendered from World War II. This ended any attempts for the British to try to reunite the two countries back together. As a result, France was divided into two zones. One was under German military while the other was under French sovereignty.

    Pearl Harbor - WORLD WAR II
    On December 7th, the Japanese attacked the US Naval Base. This event was called Pearl Harbor. The US was unprepared for the attack and as a result more than 3,400 troops were killed in battle. This event is still recognized today.

    On April, 4, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization or NATO was created. It's main goal, was to protect its members from threats from the Soviet Union. It served its purpose and helped to save many. It still exists today.

    On August 2, 1955, the Space Race started. This race was a competition between the US and the Soviet Union. The main goal was to see who had the better technology to send someone to space. The US won when Neil Armstrong first stepped on the moon. Space exploration has advanced since then.

    The Vietnam war started due to trying to prevent communism from taking over the region. In the end, Vietnam won the war and the US economy was damaged. Due to weapons used though, many who served in that war now have Agent Orange poisoning.

    At the age of 43, Kennedy become the 35th president by winning the 1960 election. He served as a symbol of purpose and hope for the US. Eventually, he went on to help America and its citizens throughout his presidency.

    The Bay of Pigs was an invasion of Cuba by Cuban exiles. The invasion failed and many were killed. In the end though, the attack helped to strengthen Castro's power.

    The Berlin Wall was erected to prevent people from fleeing to West Berlin. The main reason was to prevent the West from having an influence on the East. This led to the reunification of East and West Germany.

    The Nuclear Test Ban Treaty helped to ban nuclear weapon testing. It allowed for these weapons to be tested underground, as long as it wasn't radioactive. However, they could not be tested underwater, in the atmosphere, or in space. This allowed for many to be protected from accidental explosions from testing.

    "I Have a Dream" - THE 1960'S
    Martin Luther King Jr. gave his famous "I Have a Dream" speech on August 28th. This speech helped to create the Civil Rights Act that we have today. This act also led to the Voting Rights Act. With the help of these two acts, he was able to help end segregation.

    March on Washington - CIVIL RIGHTS
    The March on Washington for jobs and freedom was planned by civil rights leaders. They wanted to celebrate the 100 year anniversary of the emancipation proclamation and protest racial discrimination and legal equality. In the end, these marches helped to ensure the Civil Rights Act.

    JFK was assassinated in Dallas, Texas. There are many theories about who killed him and why. However, none of these theories have been proven. This event eventually led to the 25th Amendment.

    On January 23rd, the 24th amendment was created. It banned poll taxes in elections in both federal and state elections. This amendment is still in act today.
  • Malcolm X Assassination - CIVIL RIGHTS

    Malcolm X Assassination - CIVIL RIGHTS
    Malcolm X received several death threats. On February 21, he was killed. However, he left a legacy and inspired many to fight for social justice and equality after his death.

    The Selma Marches - CIVIL RIGHTS
    The Selma Marches were caused by voter registration in Alabama. 25,000 marchers were able to complete the march and in the end, helped African Americans to gain voting rights.

    Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated in Memphis Tennessee. His assassination was a symbol of assault on the ideals that he represented. Many riots were started due to this event and many were killed.

    The Environmental Protection Agency, or EPA, was created by president Nixon. The goal was to fix environmental problems, enforce guidelines, and monitor environmental issues. It eventually helped to pass new environmental legislation such as the Clean Air Act.

    In the 1980 election, Ronald Reagan was elected as the president of the US. During his presidency he was able to help many. He was also able to get the economy back on track.

    9/11 - CONTEMPORARY YEARS
    On September 11, hijackers were able to crash two planes into the twin towers in New York City. Almost 3,000 people were killed and many were injured. This event is why we now have no fly lists and extra protocol when flying.
  • No Child Left Behind - CONTEMPORARY YEARS

    No Child Left Behind - CONTEMPORARY YEARS
    President Bush made a major education initiative that had the goal of improving the public education system. It was called No Child Left Behind. It would help to create accountability and higher standards for teachers and students through the use of yearly tests. It is still in effect today and is the reason why we have our yearly tests.

    Hurricane Katrina - CONTEMPORARY YEARS
    Hurricane Katrina was a major hurricane. Many were told to evacuate but thousands decided to stay. By the end of the storm, 80% of New Orleans was flooded causing a public health emergency. Many were killed or seriously injured. This event is still well known today. Every time there is a hurricane now, many are more prepared than they were during Hurricane Katrina.
