Rome became an empire in 27 B.C.E after dictator Julius Caesar was assaisnated by his own senators on March 15 44 B.C.E. Gaius Octavian Thurinus (Julius Caesar’s nephew) became the first emperor of the Rome and took the name Augustus Caesar. -

Roman Art
The Romans improved their art by copying art from the Greeks for the statues. Statues were made from clay or marble and sometimes they added metal to make it stronger. Statues were well made, were naked and they were made of gods or important leaders which were recognised . The fact that the statues had important people meant that they had to be done as well as possible since it was honouring their gods.
The Romans also engraved gems in dcuments as seals to add authenticity to the document. -

Romans built aqueducts to carry water from resevooirs in the country to the city, some of which still stand today. Aqueducts weren't only used in ancient Rome, they are used today in many places around the country. They were also the first to build roads and highways. Also were one of the first civilizations to use concrete. -

Advances in Medicine
Englishmen William Harvey accurately described the circulation of blood in the human body. He also added that blood is pumped around the body by the heart. In 1635 Harvey worked with Robert Hooke to conduct expirements that showed that blood picks up something during the passage through the lungs which turns it bright red. In 1743 French chemist Antoine Levoisier discovered oxygen, at that moment the respritory system was fully understood. -
