  • Phenakistiscope

    Phenakistiscope
    This device consisted of a cardboard disk with a series of still images.  The viewer could rotate the disk and view the image reflected off of a mirror through a series of slits. This device is widely considered to be one of the earliest forms of animation and a precursor to modern cinema. The first iterations of the Phenakistiscope were created independently by Joseph Plateau and 6 Simon Stamfer. Initial production was simply a series of 6 discs created by hand by Stamfer.
  • Kineograph

    Kineograph
    The kineograph, or better known as a flipbook, first appeared in 1868 was patented by John Barnes Linnett. the name Kineograph is latin for moving picture and it was the first form of animation to use a linear sequence of images in the form of a booklet rather than circular drums.
  • Théâtre Optique

    Théâtre Optique
    The Théâtre Optique,  invented by  Émile Reynaud , was a system for projecting a number of moving images. A 'magic lantern' shined a light through a ser ies of transparent, hand-drawn images onto a mirror. The initial screening of this device preceded the Lumiere Brother's Cinematograph, but it did not project real images.

    a silent film animated by James Stuart Blackton who was among the first to use stop motion animation in America in it  In it, Blackton would do thing such as sketching a face, cigars, and a bottle of wine, then he would remove these last drawings as real objects so that the face appears to react.

  • Felix the Cat

    Felix the Cat becomes the first famous animated cartoon character. Was popular during the silent era of film. Appeared with an animated creation of Charlie Chaplin in 1923.
  • Little Red Riding Hood

  • Walt Disney Studios founded

    Walt Disney Studios founded
    Walt Disney and his brother Roy O. Disney incorporated the "Disney Bros. Cartoon Studio" in 1923, mainly producing animated shorts. The "Alice Comedies" were their first set of shorts, featuring a live action girl in an animated world. This studio would go on to be called Walt Disney Studios.
  • Walt Disney marries Lillian Bounds

    While this in itself isn't particularly interesting in the history of film, it has some significance. Lillian Bounds grew up less than 50 miles from here in the village of Spalding Idaho. Lillian was hired as an ink artist early in 1925,  and her and Walt were married in Lewston in July of that year. There are unconfirmed rumors that the river used in the Disney intro logo (post 2006) was based on the river running through Lewiston.

  • First ever Looney Tunes short film

    Warner bros creates Looney Tunes in an effort to compete with Disney's Mickey Mouse animated shorts. The first Looney Tunes short was called "Sinkin in the bathtub."
  • Multi-pane Camera

    The Multi-pane camera featured a camera mounted on a rack, pointing at various frames of images. Each frame and the camera could be moved independently to produce impressive zoom  and paralax effects. The first Multi-pane camera was invented by Walt Disney Studios animator Ub Iwerks using parts from an old Chevy sedan. The camera was quickly put into use in many Disney features.      first full feature animated film in america, first full feature animated film by walt disney, and the first animated film to be shown in technicolor. international earnings of $8 million during its initial release briefly assumed the record of highest-grossing sound film at the time.

  • Fantasia

    Produced by Walt Disney, Fantasia featured 8 short animated segments set to music by Leopold Stokowski. This film was the third feature length film by Walt Disney Studios. More importantly, Fantasia was the first film to be presented in stereophonic sound.
  • Pinocchio

    Pinocchio
    Pinocchio was the 2nd feature-length animated film created by Walt Disney Studios, during there "heyday" for big featured animation films. The film was made based off the puppet series, "Pinocchio: Tales of a Puppet" made back in 1883.
  • Pearl Harbor

    On Decmeber 7, 1941, hundred of Japanese planes launched an attack on the American naval base Pearl Harbour. Over 2400 Americans died and over 1000 soldiers were wouned. The following day, Franklin D. Roosevelt asked to wage war against Japan. This marked the start of US invovement in World War II.
  • Disney World War II Propoganda

    After the attack on Pearl Harbor shook America, nearly half of the Walt Disney Studios was requisitioned as an base for antiaircraft troops. Walt Disney used this as an opportunity to make millitary training films and propoganda. The most notable of these is "Der Fuehrer’s Face"
  • Micky Mouse Copyright Expiry

    By 1909, the length had been exteded to 56. The character Mickey Mouse debuted in 1928, so under the law of the time, characters were protected for 56 years. by 1976, Disney had done significant lobbying to extend the copyright further. As a result, congress passed an act that exteded protection of corporate works to 75 years. The length was exteded again in 1998 to 95 years. Since Disney is the largest media company in the world, this date will likely be exteded yet again in the next 5 years.
