    It was to challenge the meaning of the 14th Amendment, which was place to protect a person to be deny of equal protection in the eye of law. It help to give out the meaning of "separate but equal" that is widely use through out the Brown v Board of Education in the 1954
  • Brown v. Broad of Education

    Brown v. Broad of Education
    It was a landmark court case that rule racial segregation as unconstitutional and overturn the "separate but equal". The court case come up when the Brown family decide to sue so that their daughter could attend at an all white school. Most in the south did not like that and some did not follow the supreme court ruling.
  • Murder of Emmett Till

    Murder of Emmett Till
    An African American, named Emmett Till, at age of 14 was brutally murder by two white men for allegedly flirt with a white woman. He was drag out of his great uncle's home, made to carry cotton-gin fan to the Tallahatchie River, order ti talk off clothes, beat nearly to death, gouged his eye out, shot in the head and finally threw into the river with the cotton-gin fan. The mother of the victim, during the funeral, decide to have open casket to have the world see and for changes to be made.

    Rosa Park & Montgomery Bus Boyscott
    Rosa Park was famous during the movement as she refuse to give up her sit for another white passengers, and although she was not the first person to do so, she was more publicize as she was later back up by civil right groups. The news of her being arrested start to spread and some group start to called for the Montgomery Bus Boycotts, so in 1956 the supreme court rule segregated bus unconstitutional. It was significant as one of the first step to revolution for equality.

    Founding of Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) & Martin Luther King Jr.
    MLK was the first president of SCLC and they focus mostly on ending segregation using non-violent manner. After the death of MLK, the SCLC still engaging and try to win in voter registration and aiding many protest in the south. The group is still around today as the head of the SCLC is the daughter of MLK.
  • Little Rock Nine and Central High School

    Little Rock Nine and Central High School
    A group of nine African American students enroll to all-white high school, where on the first day of school they tested the Brown v. Broad of Education, was block from entering the school by the Arkansas National Guard. Later on, President Eisenhower sent in federal troop to escort those students to school. By sending the federal troop it signal that the president also want changes.

    Student Non-violent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) and Freedom Summer
    The SNCC group was form to give more voice during the civil right movement. They play a large part in the Freedom rides that was aim to end segregation on the buses.During the Mississippi Freedom Summer of 1964, a group of people was riding the bus as sign of protest, they were assault by a group of white supremacy and the KKK. Their main purpose was to increase voting registration.
  • Greensboro sit-in

    Greensboro sit-in
    Four students decide to sit in the white only section as protest to segregation, the movement spread to other places throughout the south. They were arrested on the charge of disturbing the peace in public place even though they were the one that got assaulted. As the movement spread, by the end of July of that year, some restaurants began to integrated the lunch counter which is a big step in the movement.

    The Supreme Court ban segregation in interstate buses, so to test the ruling a group of interracial activist ride the bus together in the south. They were in fact get beaten a lot for doing that. This show that even if the Supreme Court rule in favor of unity, many were not ready for the changes.

    March on Washington
    Around 25,000 people went to Lincoln Memorial in Washington D.C for what is known as "March on Washington" for jobs and freedom. It was a peaceful event. It was where MLK made the famous "I Have A Dream" speech. It was significant as many believe that the march encourage for the passage of the Civil Right act and the Voting Right act.

    The purpose of the act was to end segregation and ban discrimination base on race, color, religion, sex, and nationality. It was sign by LBJ and it was believe to be push by the March on Washington. It also prove that MLK nonviolent protest as a good option to fight for equality.

    Assassination of Malcolm X
    His life story is harsh and in the 1960s he was becoming one of the most influential person in the Civil Right Movement. Everything was going right for him until he was shot to death by a member of Nation of Islam while speaking at rally for his follower. He was part of the Nation of Islam but left so many think it was for revenge for leaving because his home was firebomb a week back. Instead of nonviolent like MLK he choose Violent to get result. People name him as a violent person.
  • Voting Right Act of 1965

    The act was sign by LBJ in order to help African Americans to exercise their voting right as suggest in the 15th Amendment. Before the act, many were at unfair advantage as election officials would make up things and ask for literacy skill that was not even correct in the first place. With the act enforce many African Americans were able to practice their voting right.

    He was killed by a sniper's bullet to the neck and pronounced dead at age of 39. As the news of his departure spread, many were in shock and distress and they spark riot all over the nation. After his death, many start to turn to violent method to fight and his murderer was sentence to 99 years in prison.
