FDR and the New Deal

  • Agricultural Adjustment Administration (AAA)

    Agricultural Adjustment Administration (AAA)
    Aided farmers and regulated crop production. The Supreme Court declared the act unconstitutional in 1936, and Congress passed new agricultural legislation two years later based on the soil conservation concept.
  • Federal Emergency Relief Administration (FERA)

    Federal Emergency Relief Administration (FERA)
    Helped states provide aid for the unemployed. It provided work for over 20 Million people. In 1935 it was replaced by the CWA.
  • Public Works Administration

    Public Works Administration
    Created jobs on Govenrment projects, such as building schools and other public buildings.
  • National Recovery Administration (NRA)

    National Recovery Administration (NRA)
    Established codes of fair transmission. It was created through the NIRA, but was later dissolved in 1935 during the supreme court case Schechter Poultry Corp. v. United States, which found it unconstitutional.
  • Federal Housing Administration (FHA)

    Federal Housing Administration (FHA)
    The FHA insured loans for building and repairing homes. The goals of this organization are to improve housing standards and conditions, provide an adequate home financing system through insurance of mortgage loans, and to stabilize the mortgage market.
  • Rural Electrification Administration (REA)

    Rural Electrification Administration (REA)
    Provided affordable electricity for isolated rural areas. Nearly 90% of houses in the city had electricity, but roughly only 10% of houses in rural areas did. The REA created many rural electric cooperatives.
  • Wagner Act

    Wagner Act
    Defined unfair labor practices and established the National Labor relations Board to settle disputes between employers and employeees.
  • United States Housing Administration (USHA)

    United States Housing Administration (USHA)
    USHA provided federal loans for low-cost public housing. They build houses for poor income families and homeless people to give them a better chance of success. Robert F. Wagner was a big influence on the adminstration.
  • Fair Labor Standards Act

    Fair Labor Standards Act
    Established a minimum hourly wage and a maximum number of hours in the workweek for the entire country. Set rules for the employment of workers under 16 and banned hazardous factory work for those under 18.
  • Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (FDC)

    Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (FDC)
    Required manufacturers to list ingredients in foods, drugs, and cosmetic products. Later expanded to have more powers in the 60's.
