Dalton is born to a Quaker family in Cumberland, England
-
1780s: Dalton moved to teach in Manchester, joined Manchester Literary and Philosophical Society
-
While at MLAPS, Dalton delivered his first paper on color blindness, called Daltonism
-
1793: published first book “Meteorological Observations and Essays”
-
Dalton developed a way to calculate the structure and weight of an atom; created law of partial pressures. He explained that everything that exists is made of atoms.
-
After creating the Law of Partial Pressures, Dalton had a difficult time describing his discoveries in terms of words and pictures, but in the end, he developed his atomic model. Scientists today are sometimes unsure of how to explain their experiments.
-
1803: John Ericsson was born in Sweden around when Dalton proposed his atomic theory. It explained that as temperature rises, gasses expand, therefore creating the aurora borealis (Northern Lights), which assisted Ericsson in his work as an engineer.
-
During his experiments, Dalton never had the necessary scientific instruments to be able to see inside individual atoms. However, now, modern technology has advanced enough that we are able to model an atom's internal structure.
-
Dalton summarized all of his theories in "New System of Chemical Philosophy", written from 1808 to 1827.
-
Dalton laid foundation for modern chemistry, as his theory still today holds for all chemical reactions. He also printed the first table of atomic weights, which would provide the means of organizing elements into the periodic table.
-
1844: Dalton died from a stroke
-
Conclusion
John Dalton was a hardworking scientist that advanced chemistry and the atomic theory largely. He was able to create the law of partial pressures and stated, in his atomic theory, that everything that exists is made up of atoms which cannot be created nor destroyed. His theories and essays allowed for a foundation for modern chemistry, and the development of the periodic table. -
