Elvis Presley's earned his first No. 1 hit "Heartbreak Hotel" and was now an international star. He was known for his "unruly" dancing, and was a heart throb. In the movie, Elvis stays at Forest's house and shows him how he dances... this is where Elvis got his famous moves from.

JFK
John Fitzgerald Kennedy was the 35th U.S. president. He is mostly known for his work with the space race between the U.S. and the Soviet Union. He is also known for his supposed secret relations with Marilyn Monroe. Forest meets Kennedy shortly before he gets assassinated. -
JFK Assasination
John F. Kennedy, the 35th President of the United States, was assassinated on Friday, November 22, 1963, at 12:30 p.m. in Dallas, Texas, while riding in a presidential parade with his wife Jackie Kennedy. Forest tells his story of meeting the president for being chosen in the All American football team, and mentions how he did get killed.

George Wallace stands in way of students
George Wallace was the 45th governor of Alabama, and was a strong supporter of segregation. When two African American students tried to enter class at the University of Alabama, Wallace stood in the door to block them. JFK then calls troops to the campus to force Wallace to allow the students to enter. Forest is present at the campus during this, because he is playing football.. He see's Wallace and even picks up one of the students notebooks.

Forrest joins the Vietnam War
Forrest joins the Vietnam War (1955-1975), but gets sent home after being shot in the buttocks. He saved many men and was even awarded the Medal of Honor. The Vietnam War was one of the most gruesome wars of the 20th century. America did not succeed and lost the war. U.S. soldiers fought in terrible conditions and had to fight the Vietcong's geurilla warfare. After graduating from Alabama, Forrest chooses to join the army.

Hippies and War protests
One main reason that the Vietnam war was unsuccessful is that, there was no support for the troops at the homeland. The hippies and other groups wanted the war to end, and didn't support the countries choice of joining the war. Many forms of protest was uses, including songs! Forrest's girl-Jenny- has joined the counter culture movement and he even speaks at a rally.

Moon Landing
Finally, even after JFK's assassination- his efforts succeeded and the U.S. were the first to put a human on the moon. Apollo 11 was the name of the shuttle that transported the men. Mission commander Neil Armstrong and pilot Buzz Aldrin, both American, landed the lunar module Eagle on July 20, 1969, Armstrong became the first human to step onto the lunar surface; Aldrin joined him about 20 minutes later. This is on the t.v. as everyone watches Gump.

Richard Milhous Nixon was an American politician who served as the 37th President , serving from 1969 until 1974, when he resigned from office, the only U.S. president to do so. Forrest meets Nixon after getting shot in the buttocks and shows him his wound. Nixon invites him to the Watergate hotel....

Ping Pong Diplomacy
In the early 1970s, President Nixon and China used the game of ping pong as a way to communicate and create some peace. The event marked a thaw in Sino-American relations that paved the way to a visit to Beijing by President Richard Nixon. F.orrest was the best ping pong player, and was the main one that played. -
Watergate Scandal
The Watergate scandal happened when Nixon, a Republican, was tied to a crime in which former FBI and CIA agents broke into the offices of the Democratic Party and George McGovern (the Presidential candidate). Nixon's helpers listened to phone lines and secret papers were stolen. This scandal led to Nixon resigning.. the only president to do so. In the movie, Gump can see the agents looking through the papers and stealing things from his hotel window. -
Hurricane Carmen
Hurricane Carmen was the strongest hurricane of 1974. The storm went across the Mexican Yucatan Peninsula and then cut across Louisiana. The hurricane peaked at Category 4 strength during her life. In the movie, Gump and Lt. Dan were on the shrimp boat when Carmen hit LA. This caused all the other shrimp boats to be destroyed, leaving them to be the most successful and earning much money. -
Apple
Apple Computers, Inc. was founded on April 1, 1976, by college dropouts Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak. This team brought to the company a vision of changing the way people viewed computers. They wanted to make computers small enough for people to have them in their homes or offices. Apple has become one of the most known technology companies in the world. Forrest invests in a "fruit company" after his mother dies. This company was in fact, Apple.

AIDS Outbreak
The first cases of what would later become known as AIDS were reported in the United States in June of 1981. Today, there are more than 1.1 million people living with HIV and more than 700,000 people with AIDS have died since the beginning of the epidemic. Although some did get HIV from being a homosexual, drugs were a major growing addiction - and when you shared needles, you could also get AIDS

Assassination Attempt of Raegan
The Assassination attempt on Ronald Reagan happened on March 30, 1981.... 69 days after becoming President. Reagan was leaving after speaking at the Washington Hilton Hotel. As Reagan left to enter his car, John Hinckley, Jr. fired his gun. This is playing in the background as Forrest is talking to Jenny.

SH** HAPPENS
The phrase was first observed in 1964, but wasn't used in a print publication until 1983. This saying was used to describe life's unexpected events, which could be good or bad. In the movie, Gump was running in his journey across America, and was interrupted by stepping in dog poop... a man was disgusted with the action and Gump replied "it happens".
