  • Health Education Study Committee is formed...

    ...to assess the strengths and weakness of the health programs in NHCS, which included the area of Human Development and Sexuality. Parents, students, teachers and medical professionals are surveyed. 94 of the 277 parents who answered the survey question relating to family life indicated the need for a sequential Family Life Education protram. All agreed that parental consent is necessary prior to student attendance and only exceptionally qualified people should be instructors of the course.
  • Pilot program implemented

    NHCS Central Staff develops guidelines for the implementation of a pilot program in Human Development and Sexuality for grade 7. The NHCS Board of Education (BOE) does not approve of pilot program.
  • BOE establishes an Advisory Committee

    BOE approves work to provide a sound comprehensive Human Development and Sexuality curriculum. BOE establishes an Advisory Committee which will collaborate with NHCS staff to develop this k-12 curriculum. A Community Review Committee is formed which will review the work of the Advisory Committee offering suggestions and recommendations.

  • 5th grade teacher is hired

    A teacher is hired as the Human Development teacher. The Human Growth and Development classes begin in grade 5 (20 schools).
  • Evaluations are conducted

    Evaluations are conducted among 5th graders taking the class and their parents. Results are very positive and supportive of the program.
  • Program expands to 6th grade

    The Human Growth and Development curriculum is expanded to grade 6. A Family Life Educator is hired to teach the 6th grade program.
  • Governor's Award for Excellence in Education

    The NHCS Human Growth and Development program receives teh Governor's Award for Excellence in Education.
  • North Carolina Health Educator of the Year

    The teacher for the 5th grade component of the Human Growth and Development programs, Patricia Sabrinsky, receives the North Carolina Health Educator of the year award from the North Carolina Alliance for Athletics, Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance.
  • 9th and 10th graders are surveyed

    Students in grades 9 and 10 are surveyed. The survey instrument is the Search Institute Profiles of Student Life: Attitudes and Behavior.
  • Program expands to grade 7

    NHCS, in collaboration with the New Hanover County Health Department and the Medical Society, applies and receives a five year grant for the expansion of the Human Growth and Development program to grade 7.
  • BOE establishes the Health Curriculum Ad Hoc Committee on Health Education

    BOE establishes the Health Curriculum Ad Hoc Committee on Health Education to examine the present health curriculum, study various recommendations for health education in NHCSchools and make recommendations to the BOE regarding the Health education curriculum.
  • BOE approves revised curriculum

    BOE approves the revised Human Growth and Development curriculum for grades 5,6 and 7. Information on contraceptives is included in the 7th grade curriculum. The names of the 5th grade program and middle school programs are changed to "Growth and Changes for 5th Graders" and "Stepping Stones to Better Living: Responsible Decisions."
  • Philliber Research Survey

    Students in grades 7 and 8 begin taking a pre- and post-survey to be submitted to Philliber Research annually.
  • Stepping Stones expands to 8th grade

    BOE approves of "Stepping Stones to Better LIving; Responsible Decisions" expansion to grade 8 to begin immediately. A Family Life Educator is hired to teach grade 8 "Stepping Stones." And an alternative, abstinence-only program is to be implemented by the next school year.
  • BOE adopts Sex Respect/Teen Aid

    BOE adopts "Sex Respect/Teen Aid" as the alternative, abstinence only curriculum for grades 6-8.
  • Sex Respect/Teen Aid is implemented

    "Sex Respect/Teen Aid" is implemented in the middle schools as an alternative to "Stepping Stones" allowing parents to choose between the two programs.
  • Family LIfe Education team presents at APPCNC

    The Family Life Education team conducts workshops about NHCS Family Life Education programs to participants at the Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention Coalition of North Carolina annual conference in Greensboro, NC.
  • Stepping Stones and Growth and Changes awarded Best Practice Model

    "Stepping Stones to Better Living; Responsible Decisions" and "Growth and Changes for 5th Graders" are awarded the "Best Practice Model" for adolescent pregnancy prevention from the Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention Coalition of North Carolina
  • Abstinence Until Marriage (AUM) law is passed

    Abstinence Until Marriage (AUM) law is passed requiring public schools to offer an AUM program. NHCS complies with law by offering "Sex Respect/Teen Aid." Comprehensive sexuality education can be offered when certain requirements are met, specifically, a 60 day period for community review of the instructional materials, a public hearing and BOE approval of comprehensive sexuality education.
  • NHCS holds public hearing

    NHCS holds public hearing to fulfill requirement of the AUM law. BOE approves the continuation of "Stepping Stones to Better Living: Responsible Decisions."
  • Grant submitted to replace Sex Respect/Teen Aid

    Grant is submitted for federal funds to purchase a curriculum to replace "Sex Respect/Teen Aid."
  • Grant approved

    Grant is approved to replace "Sex Respect/Teen Aid" curricula.
  • Community Review panel is formed

    A Community Curricula Review Panel is formed to review and recommend to the BOE a replacement curriculum for "Sex Respect/Teen Aid."
  • Community Review Committee reviews curricula

    From April through September, the Community Review Committee reviews 9 Abstinence Until Marriage curricula.
  • Sex Can Wait is adopted as the new AUM curriculum

    NHCS BOE adopts "Sex Can Wait" as the new Abstinence Until Marrige curriculum. This replaces the "Sex Respect/Teen Aid" curricula.
  • Sex Can Wait training

    Author of "Sex Can Wait" curriculum, Mike Young, administers teacher training to the Family Life Educators.
  • Sex Can Wait is implemented

    The "Sex Can Wait" curriculum is implemented in grades 6-8.
  • FLE team asked to speak at NC Assembly

    The NHCS Family Life Education team is asked to speak to the NC Assembly in favor of the Healthy Youth Act.
  • FLE team presents at APPCNC

    Family Life Education team presents the two-track approach to teaching sexuality education and how to implement this approach successfully at the Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention Coalition of North Carolina's annual conference.
  • Healthy Youth Act is ratified

    Healthy Youth Act of 2009 (NC) is ratified which replaces the AUM law effective the 2010-2011 school year. The law directs all public schools to provide reproductive health and safety education in grades seven through nine.
  • North Carolina Health Educator of the Year

    The "Growth and Changes" teacher, Linda Garris, receives the North Carolina Health Educator of the Year award from the North Carolina Alliance for Athletics, Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance.
