Was a mutual defense treaty between eight communist states of Eastern Europe in existence during the Cold War. -

Launched on 4 October 1957. It was the first man made satellite to orbit earth. This is good for the Soviet Union because they are ahead of the space race -

Laika was the first dog to orbit earth and it was on the sputnik 3. This is good for the Soviet Union because it shows that Russians can put organisms into space. -
Creation of the Berlin wall
Was created by eastern Germany in 1961 the purpose of it was to split the communist side from the democratic side. This is good for the Soviet Union because they have control of half of Germany and they can do what they want with that half. -
Fall of the Berlin wall
Was constructed in East Germany in 1961 to cut off West Germany. This crippled Germany. This is bad for the Soviet Union because they lost their “iron certain”. -
Hydrogen bomb
It was tested on October 30, 1961. It was good for the Soviet Union because it shows the Soviet Union has power. -
Chernobyl Disaster
A nuclear reactor failure in 1986 which lead to huge concerns about the safety of the Soviet nuclear power industry. This is bad because this shows that the Soviet Union can’t control their nuclear power. -
1968 invasion of Czechoslovakia
In 1968 soviet troops invaded Czechoslovakia to stop any possible libration from occurring so the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia can keep control of the country. This is good because the Soviet Union still keeps power in that country. -

Free election in Poland, Czechoslovakia, and Hungary
With Gorbachev and his glasnost reform soviet troops left those countries and each country handled their problems differently. This is bad for the Soviet Union because this shows they are losing power.
