Stalin's 5 year plan was designed to strengthen the country's economy ,and focus on making the nation militarily, industrially, and financially self-sufficient. This helped the Soviet Union because they knew what they had to work on based on what the goal of the plan was. -

Warsaw Pact was a mutual defense treaty between eight communist states of Eastern Europe during the cold war. This helped the Soviet Union because the treaty allowed the Soviets to have allies and suppoprt if they were ever needed. -
Sputnik 2
Sputnik 2 was the second spacecraft launched into Earth orbit & the first to carry a living animal, a dog named Laika. This helped the Soviet Union because they were ahead of everyone else in the space race and this was the second spacecraft that was sent to orbit. -
Laika
Laika was a Soviet space dog that became the first animal to orbit the Earth – as well as the first animal to die in orbit. This helped the Soviet Union becuase they were once again moving foward in the space race by sending the first animal to orbit. -
Berlin Wall
Berlin Wall was a barrier that completely cut off West Berlin from surrounding East Germany and from East Berlin. This was a good thing for the Soviet Union because it aloud communism to exist and it cut off the influence of democratic goverment. -
Invasion of Czechoslovakia
The Soviet Union and her main satellite states in the Warsaw Pact invaded the Czechoslovak because it broke the Warsaw Pact and tried to get rid of commnunism. This was possitive for the S.U. because it showed that they were not going to let other countries stop the communist goverment. -
Salt I
SALT I was an agreement between US and the Soviet Union to stop the manufacturing of nuclear weapons. This was a possitive and negative thing for the Soviet Union because it no longer aloud them to develop nuclear weapons but the US was also no longer aloud to develope any more nuclear weapons either. -
Salt II
SALT II was a negotiation between the U.S. and the Soviet Union, which said they were to dismantle the nuclear weapons that we have. This was positve for the Soviets because they agreed with the U.S to start taking apart their nuclear weapons, -

The Soviet war in Afghanistan was a nine-year war during the Cold war involving the Soviet Union, supporting the Marxist-Leninist government. This was bad for the soviets because they were unable to win the war against a much small afghan nation. -
Gorbachev Becomes Leader
After the death of Secretary General Cherenenko, Mikhail Gorbachev was named the new leader of the Soviet Union. This was a negative thing for the Soviet Union because he was trying to make changes in order to create relationships with other countries. -
Glasnost
Glasnost was a policy which called for increased openness and transparency in government institutions and activities in the Soviet Union. This was bad for the soviet union because it started to make the goverment change. -
Chernobly
Chernobyl was a catastrophic nuclear accident that occurred on 26 April 1986 at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in Ukraine. This was bad for the soviet union because it was embarrassing that the explosion occured. -
Voting Refrorms by Gorbachev
Gorbachev institutes reforms in voting, allowing Soviet citizens to vote for people other than Communist Party members. This was negative thing for the Soviet Union because it allowed people to vote for people other then the communist so the goverment was slowly changing, -
Perestroika
Perestroika was a political movement within the Communist Party of the Soviet Union widely associated with the Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev. This was bad for the Soviet Union because it showed their weaknesses. -
Free Elections in Polond, Czech and Hungary
After the end of the cold war, other political parties are aloud to emerge and free elections are held in Poland Hungary and Czech. This was negative for the Soviet Union because after the cold war these countries were able to hold elections for non communist parties. -
Fall of the Berlin Wall
On the 9th of November, 1989, the Border separating Western from Eastern Germany was effectively opened. This was negative for the USSR becaues there was no seperation between communist and non communist groups. -
Protests In Lithuania and Lativia
Protests in Lithuania between January 11 and 13, 1991 in the aftermath of the Act of the Re-Establishment of the State of Lithuania as a result of Soviet military actions. -

Gorbachev Steps Down
Mikhail Gorbachev, leader of the Soviet Union for almost seven years and executive president for nearly two, stepped down from office. This was negative for the Soviet Union because the leader of the Soviet Union was forced to step down.
