  • Chapter 21 Part 1

    Fitz has a talk with Bae about how she still needs to produce more heirs
    Fitz goes to a tea party at the chapel Ethel and Maud work at and Ethel and Fitz catch up about war and Ethel’s newspaper gig.
  • Chapter 21 Part 2

    Ethel and Fitz meet at the Victoria train station. They go to a house in Chelsea and Fitz offers her the house and servants if she becomes his mistress, Ethel runs away undecided.

    Gus Dewar and Lady Maud talk about Lloyd George being unpredictable and maybe agreeing to peace talks. They also talk a little about Maud and Walter’s love and Gus’ failed love life. Gus kinda likes Maud

    Ethel debates Fitz’s offer. Germans officially offer peace talks
    Billy comes to Ethel’s house on leave and stays with Mildred.
    There is a debate between anti-peace people (fitz) and peace supporters (Maud, Ethel, Billy, and Bernie). Billy gets Fitz angry by calling him a liar and a fool

    Ethel goes to the house of commons to watch Lloyd George speak
    Ethel gets dragged out of the house because she starts yelling the names of dead people after Lloyd George refuses the German peace offer.
  • Chapter 22 Part 1

    Walter is upset that the peace offer was rejected by Britain
    The kaiser passes the naval strategy of unrestricted submarine warfare, which let submarines attack every ship bringing goods to the allies.
    Walter, his father, and his fathers friend talk about supporting a Mexican war with America.
  • Chapter 22 Part 2

    Fitz thinks about how he was glad the peace talks never happened and how he felt bad Ethel never accepted his offer to live in Chelsea.
    Fitz goes to work and finds the Zimmermann telegram, which talks about German unrestricted submarine warfare and a possible alliance with Mexico, and needs to find a way to get the information to America

    Ethel and Bernie marry, Ethel’s family is happy she settled down and Bernie’s family seems happy for him.
  • Chapter 22 Part 3

    Fitz meets with gus at the ring (a boxing pub) to tell him about the Zimmermann telegram
    Gus is pissed off and they try to make a plan to publish the telegram without compromising British intelligence and making the telegram look like a fake (we don’t know the plan yet).
  • Chapter 22 Part 5

    Gus gives the Zimmermann telegram to Rosa (a reporter) who will publish the telegram which the US government will verify. The hope is that Americans will be very angry and public opinion will make the US declare war on Germany.
  • Chapter 23 Part 1

    Grigori is still in Petrograd and every Sunday visits Katerina. This time, Vladimir is sick and the landlady is eating the milk meant for Vladimir. Grigori gets Vladimir checked by a midwife, buys milk, and tries but fails to buy bread.
  • Chapter 23 Part 2

    Grigori is dissipated to defend Petrograd and is stationed at Tauride Palace and are asked to set up machine guns. Grigori saw no violence, but some men did so he started a meeting in the mess hall for people to talk about what happened
  • Chapter 23 Part 3

    Grigori is defending the Liteiny Bridge. He was going to do what he usually did and let protestors pass but Pinsky and the police showed up. The protest had turned into a political movement for basically revolution. Eventually, the protestors try and cross the bridge and Pinski starts shooting demonstrators. Grigori shoots Pinski (who survives) and helps arm what is now a revolution. There was a police sniper in a church and Grigori went and killed the sniper (Kozlov).
  • Chapter 23 Part 4

    Grigori is elected to as a representative to the Petrograd Soviet. Everything is disorganized and the Duma is trying to return things to normal. Grigori creates order number 1 which changes the military and makes basically makes the soviet rule supreme.
  • Chapter 23 Part 5

    Grigori goes back to Katerina who has been staying at home as much as possible. The Tsar tried to put down the revolution but the soldiers mutinied. It looked like the Tsar just gave up. The soviet is trying to make an assembly of all classes and abdicate the Tsar.

    The Tsar abdicated the crown. But gave the crown to the grant duke Mikhail (tsars younger brother). Grigori and others go to Mikhail and ask him to refuse the crown, Mikhail refuses the crown and Grigori is happy because the monarchy is over.

  • Chapter 24 Part 1

    Walter is walking with Monika at his Berlin estate. Monika steals his wallet and discovers he is married to Maud Fitzherbert. Walter proposed to his father the plan to get Lenin and Martov into Russia via Germany so the Russian war machine would weaken or completely leave the war.
  • Chapter 24 Part 2

    Walter writes a letter to Maud from Switzerland so he can mail it to her. He tells Maud about how his mom chose someone for him to marry and that person knows their secret but he feels they are still safe.
  • Chapter 24 Part 3

    US declares war on Germany. Lenin is accompanied by Walter as he is transported to Russia. Lenin is a natural born leader who is very determined but he runs things like a dictator. Walter asks his father to ask the German government to supply the Bolsheviks with 100,000 rubles
  • Chapter 24 Part 4

    Walter takes the Bolsheviks to Sweden, and hopes for a letter from Maud that isn’t there. Walter gives 100,000 rubles to Lenin in exchange for the Bolsheviks pushing for peace. He also promises another 100,000 rubles every month if he continues to speak for peace.
  • Chapter 24 Part 5

    Walter is happy he successfully bribed Lenin. Maud visits Walter at his hotel in Sweden after making a lie about interviews and using a passenger steamer.
  • Chapter 24 Part 6

    Grigori and thousands of others welcome Lenin home. Lenin immediately gives a speech that the provisional government has failed, the war needs to be stopped, and everything needs to be seized by the government then controlled/given to the people. The professional government threatens Lenin, saying they will put down any revolutions.
  • Chapter 25 Part 1

    Lev is the manager of his father in laws nightclub. Lev gets caught with his pants down and is now the manager of a Vyalov foundry (Buffalo Metal Works). He lies to Olga about why he got transferred and is always thinking about women
  • Chapter 25 Part 2

    Gus is sent to the Buffalo metal works to break a strike a get military production rolling again. Gus talks about how America has to get involved in the war because of the Zimmermann telegram, the sinking of American ships, and so they can get involved in the peace negotiations.
  • Chapter 25 Part 3

    Lev has to go against the strike to improve relations with his father-in-law. He uses the press by calling the strikers enemy agents to hopefully end the strike before Gus comes to help end the strike.
  • Chapter 25 Part 4

    Gus, Lev, and Union workers have a meeting at the Statler Hotel to discuss resolving the strike. Gus gives the union worker a $0.50 raise (they asked for $1). Lev and Vyalov agree to the raise because Gus threatens to take over the factory by military force because it is a wartime industry.
  • Chapter 25 Part 5

    Lev goes to Marga’s house after telling Olga he was going to the foundry. Olga and his father catch him and he is punished by getting sent to the army.
  • Chapter 25 Part 6

    Lev and Gus meet at Gus’ house before Lev goes off to war (he is in the middle of officer training). Lev talks about how Gus should volunteer or accept conscription because he and the president got America involved in the war.
