    The First Free Parliamentary Election
    This first free parliamentary election is held in Budapest. Democratic Forum (MDF) winning 43% of the vote and the Free Democrats (SZDSZ) capturing 24%. Under Prime Minister Jozsef Antall, the coalition governments achieved a reasonably well-functioning parliamentary democracy and laid the foundation for a free market economy. These elections finally rided Hungary of any signs of the past government.

    After being elected the president of the MDF in 1989 and after the National Roundtable Talks, József Antall was the first freely elected prime minister. Antall's tenure saw the return to capitalistism and the most stable Eastern Europe government after the fall of the Soviet bloc, but his term was cut short when on December 12, 1993 he died of cancer.     Coinciding with the withdrawal of Soviet troops from Hungary, Hungary also withdrew from the Warsaw Pact, which was the first step in joining NATO.
