European rulers wanted to get some of the things Marco Polo wrote about. But soon, the Europeans were tired of paying Italians high prices for Asian goods, so they found another sea route. The were aware of Africa and Asia, but they weren't aware of the Americas. So when they ran into North America on there way to Asia, they were very confused.
