Juan Ponce de Leon was a Spanish official on the new world. He explored and settled the island of Puerto Rico. Taking notice back in Spain, King Ferdinand authorized Ponce de Leon to explore lands north of Cuba. -

Hernanhado de Soto sailed with a military expedition from Havana, Cuba to the west coast of Florida. From there Hernando de Soto soliders' marched foward toward present day Tallahassee Florida. There they spent the winter of 1539-1540 in the spring. -
