The Compromise of 1850
California was admitted as a free state. New mexico and Utah could vote for or against slavery. No sale of slaves in Washington D.C. Texas would give up claim to New Mexican Territory. Fugitive Slave Act required citizens to apprehend runaway slaves (victory for South). -
Nebraska Act of 1854 (Bleeding Kansas)
Popular sovereignty was a way to decide whether slavery would be allowed in the Nebraska Territory. Abolitionists were furious over the "border ruffians"who voted illegally and won a majority for the proslavery candidates. Abolitionists organized a rival government in Topeka. Violence surfaced in the struggle for Kansas. -

Democratic party splits over issue of slavery. Republicans nominate Lincoln. -
Lincoln's Election
Lincoln wins without winning any electoral votes from South. He gets 39% popular vote. -
First Bull Run
Union winning until Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson's Virginian's made a stand. Many confederate soldiers, confident the war was over, left he army and went home. -
Battle of Fredricksburg
Burnside attacked Lee. Union loses 13,000 men while CSA only loses 5000 men. -

Union troops conquered Richmond. -

"The Turning Point" Lee's army was looking for supplies. In three days nearly 50,000 killed for Union Victory. November 1863 was the Gettysburg Address- "why we fight, dedication to those men" -
Battle at Chansellorsville
Joe Hooker vs. Lee . It was Lee's greatest victory. Twelve mile surprise attack in the woods). Jackson was shot in left arm and dies from wound. This was Lee's most costly loss. -
