it wasnt till 1912 that a design stuck ,innovated by Lady Jennifer Bell Schofield. a hinge would contain two hot irons. the irons would open and close two recieve hair in between them. this is the start of the modern design. -

in some cases irons would be used as a striaghter. they'd put hair on a flat surface and go over it with a clothihng iron -
marketing is key
after big hair blew over in the 80s , it was back to straight hair. this came the more modern irons which were specifically marketed for striaghtening hair. -
famous
at this time the striiaghtner became more world known with hair pros. it evolved to be more portable -
new plates
ceremic plates became more efficient than iron plates did. they made a huge difference to the health of your hair. -
more buttons
the next improvement to the striaghtner was more buttons, that controled heat. these gave options to the temperature at which you style your hair. -

today striaghteners come in any color you want , temperature control buttons , can turn off by itself when over heating , and can even brush your hair while you striaghten (etc). from heating up metal to having it heat up itself, the straightener has come a long way.
