The First High School
Boston English Highschool Opens. It becomes the first high school to open in America. At this time school was limited mainly for the wealthy, but with the opening of this school allowed for greater opportunities to arise. -
Slaves not allowed Literacy 1830's
Enslaved black were still refused an education in the south while private schools began to increase especially for girl past primary schooling. The education consisted of a classical education similar to what the boys had already been receiving. -
Massachusetts 1st to enforce schooling
Massachusetts becomes the first state to enforce education for children. This would start a ripple effect as more and more states began to follow in the steps of Massachusetts. -
Board of Education Founded
The Board of Education is created and was placed to help states establish a much more renown school system. -
School at the start of1900's
At the start of the 1900's school in America began to change as 34 states passed a law stating school is now mandatory all the way through the age of 14. By 1918 all states at the time required for all children to attend and complete elementary school.
