    The Raft
    The first means of transportation over water was a raft. The first raft was made over thousands of years ago. They were made from tying logs together with creepers. People would use long sticks to steer the raft. There were no cameras back then, but this is an example of what the raft would look like.

    Phoenician design: from 1100 BC
    This ship, from 1100 BC, was used for trading. It has many oars for more speed. The only way to increase speed would be to add more oarsmen. The ships with rounded ends and are squat and tubby are for transportation of passengers. If it were longer with a rounded stern, then it would be for war.

    Long Ships
    Long ships were made in the 11th century. They were made long to fit more people to row. They more people there were to row, the faster they could go. A platform was added on this ship for archers to stand on. These ships were more adapt for war and speed compared to the others.

    European Cargo Ships
    These European Cargo Ships are from the 15th century. A second and third mast was added to this ship to catch more wind. This was to improve the speed and decrease the amount of rowers needed. These ships were considerably larger than other ships and could therefore carry more cargo.

    First Steam Powered Ship
    The first steam-powered boat was made in 1736. John Finch, the creator, added propellers based on paddles. This ship actually had an engine to power the boat verses, having to row or rely on the wind. This ship could go about 2000 to 3000 miles at its best. It advances the speed of the ship as well.

    Modern War Ships
    These ships could hold about 1500 sailors along with they weapons the used. They can go 33 knots, twice as much as current flagships. These battle ships had weapons built into them too, such as missiles and guns. Now they have several inches of steel as protection verses about an inch.
