Pantomime is Introduced by the Greeks
The Greek "pantomimus" which literally translates to "imitating all" was a highly regarded form of solo dancing often accompanied by music which encompassed both comedy and tragedy. It's popularity was also widespread amongst the Romans until the Christian church forbade it's public display. Some contended that this Roman dance form managed to survive through the middle-ages but this is often disputed due to a lack of evidence. -

Comedia dell'arte was a dance-like, theatrical form of Pantomime. It was first introduced by the Italians. -
Pantomime After the French Revolution is Not Encouraged
Pantomime, like most theatrical arts, was criticized after the French Revolution as being inflammatory to the politics of the time. After the death of "Dancing" King Louis XIV, the arts were not encouraged. Despite the fact that pantomime was frowned upon, it became widely popular. One silent film, called "The Mute" was a quite popular pantomime film in 1828. -
Circus Acts Employ Mimes
Many circus acts began to employ talented mime artists. Carl Godlewski was a popular "variety" actor of the 1900's, and the famous, Étienne Decroux, began to influence the way pantomime was perceived in music halls and silent films. -
Famous Pantomime Artists Arose
Famous silent film actors began to build their careers as mimes. Two of these stars were Buster Keaton and Charlie Chaplin. -
Decroux Founded the First Pantomime School in Paris.
One of Decroux's most famous students was Marcel Marcaeu. -
Future Prediction for Pantomime
I predict that in the future pantomime will be just as popular as it is today, but it will become increasingly more popular in movies. People will begin creating more silent films (ala: the movie, THE ARTIST), and we will see more of this style resurface. -
