    Sony released the first US Playstation in September 1995. This was one the first consoles that succcesfully used CDs instead of cartridges . Originally it was meant to be a part of Nintendos hardware to play Nintendo games on a disc but that deal fell through and it became its own console.

    In the year 2000, the PlayStation 2 was released. This tech improved on its predecessor by using better hardware allowing for better performance/graphics, backwards compatability and the ability to play DVDs. The console has sold 155 million units
  • Microsoft Xbox

    The first console developed by Microsoft. While not being as successful as the PlayStation 2, The Xbox was significant as it was the first console to not need memory cards to save data as it had a built in HDD.

    The GameCube was very important for its time in Nintendo's history. Not only did it improve on performance from previous console such as the Nintendo 64, but it was also the first console of Nintendo's to use optical discs instead of game cartridges.

    The Xbox 360 was an all-around improvement on its predecessor. Part of its innovations was its improved online system which pioneered the now industry standard of digital game purchasing.
