Magna Carta
This was the first documnent forced on to the King of England by the people. It outlined restrictions on the kings power, annd gave rights to people. The significance is that it challnenged the idea that monarchs had absolute power, it guarenteed peoples rights. -
Mayflower Compact
The Mayflower Compact was a documnet signed by 41 English colonists on the Mayflower ship. This was the first written framework of government. It was created to prevent conflict with the Puritans, and Pilgrams who had recently arrived in Plymouth. This was help towards a Revolution, and writing the Constitution. -
The Petition Of Rights
This was the document that barred the King from acts such as arresting or punishing people without casue. This was a milestone in the development of democracy. The people realized the King's power was not God given, and this said that the monarch's have the same laws as everyone else does. -
English Bill of Rights
This is an act of the parliament of England, that required parliamentary approval on the action's done by the monarchs. This made sure the monarch's couldn't change the laws or have standing miltary. This was important because Parliamnet was taking a stand to limit government power. -
Albany Plan of Union
This was a plan to place the British NA colonies under more centralized government. Representatives from seven coloniesadopted this plan, even though it wasnt carried out this was the first attempt a group had as a whole union, it attempted to establish separation between branches. -
Stamp Act
The new tax forced American colonists to pay a tax on every piece of printed paper they used. England was raising money in the colonies without the approval of the colonial legislatures, which was wrong. This was an act or rebel to prove limited government is necessary or they take advantage. -
Stamp Act Congress
The first gathering of elected representatives from several American colonies to protest the new British taxation. They thought it was unfair! " No taxaitation without representation" This led to many outbursts all around, people started to stand up for what is right. -
Declaration Of Rights and Grievances
This was a documnet written by the Stamp Act Congress, it stated that the taxes given to the British Colonists without their approval was unconstitutional. This was significant because it helped pave the raod to limited government, and people actually standing up for themselves. -
Boston Tea Party
The Boston Tea Party was a political protest in 1773 by the Sons of LIberty. There was a heavy tax put on tea, causing much hatred from the citizens. The only way they could stand up for themselves was to rebel. So the Sons of LIberty led by Samuel Adams disguised themselves as Indians and snuck aboard a British ship filled with taxed tea. The rebels took the tea and tossed it into the Boston Harbor. This led to the Coercive Acts of 1774, and sparked the road to revolution. -
Intolerable Acts
The Intolerable Acts was the name given to laws that were passed by the British Parliament to punish the rebels who acted out in the Boston Tea Party. This included laws that said all of the tea that was destoryed must be paid for, and also closed the port of Boston. The people were trying to make a point that the government had to much power, this was given to punish them . -
Second Continental Congress
The SCC managed the colonial war effort, and initally moved towards independence, and helping adopt the Declaration Of Independence. This was a convention of delegates from the 13 colonies, and succeded the first continental congress. This helped move to a more limited government. -
First Continental Congress
This was a convention of delegates of 12 colonies, Georiga was not present, that met in Pennsylvania in the beginning of the American Revolution. This was a meeting takiing place after the Intolerable acts were made. The goal was to petition King George III for his actions. Leading to limited government. -
Declaration of Independence
This may be the most important document ever written. It was formed by the Continental Congress, and stated that the 13 American colonies were becoming independent, and were no longer under the British Empire. Thomas Jefferson was elected in charge of writing it. This group formed a union that eventually became a new nation, the USA! This all took place after the American Revolution, but proved that if you stand up for what you belive in, you can get there someday. Symbol of LIberty and freedom.
