Proclamation of 1763
The Proclamation of 1763 prohibited colonists from living west of the Appalachian Mountains, on Native American Land. -
The Sugar Act
The Sugar Act lowered taxes on the molasses colonies imported. The act also allowed officers to seize goods from smugglers without going to court. -
The Stamp Act
The Stamp Act was a tax on all printed items, which included newspapers, wills, and even playing cards needed a stamp to show that they had paid the tax. -
Quartering Act
Made colonists provide food and housing for British troops stationed in America. -
The Townshend Acts
The Townshend Acts placed tax on imported items such as glass, tea, and paper. Protests arose from this Act. -
The Boston Massacre
In Boston a fight broke out between a group of soldiers and Bostonians which eventually ended up in the British soldiers shooting out into the crowd. -
The Tea Act
The Tea Act placed taxes on tea which made the colonists angry because they didn't want to pay the tax. -
The Boston Tea Party
The Boston Tea Party was an act of civil disobedience, when some colonists dressed up as Native Americans and threw out 342 chests of tea overboard. -
The Intolerable Acts
The Intolerable Acts were meant to punish the colonists for resisting British authority. -
The First Continental Congress Meets
55 delegates met in Philidelphia coming to set up a political body that would represent the colonies and challenge Brtish control by discussing their complaints against the British and then voting. -
Lexington & Concord
It was a battle that took place at Lexington and Concord against the minutemen and the British. It was the start of the fight for independence. -
The Defeat of Fort Ticonderoga
Both Benedict Arnold and Ethan Allen took the British by surprise and Fort Ticonderoga surrendered. -
The Second Continental Congress
The Second Continental Congress authorized the printing of money, set up a post office, formed commitees to handle relations with the Native Americans and foreign countries, and most importantly set up the Continental Army. -
Battle of Bunker Hill
A battle that took place on Breed's Hill, though it was a British victory they realized that fighting the Americans would be much harder than they anticipated. -
Common Sense Was Published
Common Sense, written by Thomas Paine, called for a complete break from British Rule. -
Washington's Troops Drove Away The British
Once Washington felt that his troops were ready he moved his cannons and soldiers in a position oevrlooking Boston. The British eventually retreated. -
Declaration of Independence
The Declaration of Independence declared America as a new nation away from British rule.
