Events that led to the Civil War

  • John Rolfe

    John Rolfe
    John Rolfe introduced the first cash crop in the colony in 1612. This crop needed a ton of labor, which means that slaves were needed to harvest and grow the crops. This led to the Civil War because slaves a lot of slaves would be needed.
  • The Cotton Gin

    The Cotton Gin
    The cotton gin was a machine that made cotton farming faster and more productive, this increased profits and plantations in the south. This led to the Civil War because more workers were needed to the farm and operate the plantations
  • The Missouri Compromise

    The Missouri Compromise
    Missouri wanted to enter the country as a slave state but due to the 22 states being divided equally this caused. The compromise made it to were Maine came as a free state and Missouri a slave state. Later a boundary would be put in the Louisiana territory to separate the slave and non slave states. This led to the Civil War occurring sooner.
  • Nat Turner's Rebellion

    Nat Turner's Rebellion
    Nat Turner was a slave who tried to led a slave rebellion in Southampton County, Virginia. Killing around 60 white people he would soon find out he failed to rebel getting him and 55 slaves were executed. This led to the Civil War for the justification of the attempt in the civil war.

    After the war, the United States got land from Mexico. Getting this land meant that more slave and free states were to start again due to the land. This led to the Civil War because extension of slavery in west. But due to always prohibiting slavery in the west this caused problems.
  • The Compromise of 1850

    The Compromise of 1850
    Senator Henry Clay introduced a series of solutions on January 29,1850 to make a compromise and avert the crisis between the north and south. Due to this the Fugitive salve act was amended and slave trade in Washington was abolished. This sparked an uproar with slave owners due to the northerns not being able to return slaves to the south which led to the Civil War
  • Uncle Tom's Cabin

    Uncle Tom's Cabin
    The book states how Uncle Tom, a faithful and honest man, was traded to pay off a debt of property, and later traded repeatedly. This book later led to Abraham Lincoln himself saying that "this is the lady that started this war". This led to the Civil War because it changed how slavery was viewed.
  • Bleeding Kansas

    Bleeding Kansas
    John Brown went to Kansas to fight for it to be a free states but pro-slavery wanted it to be established as a slave states. During the fight John Brown killed slave supporters to get his point across hinting Bleeding Kansas. This led to the Civil War because anti slavery took John Browns intentions to make the state a free state and tried to establish it. Anti-slavery and slavery supporters fought for the land to determine its position in the Untied States
  • John Browns Raid

    John Browns Raid
    A white abolitionist who wanted to make a slave revolt. John Brown raided a United State arsenal Harpers Ferry, Virginia to arm the slaves for the revolt. During the raid we saw himself surrounded and cornered by civilians and marines. This led to the Civil War because it was a white man trying to free slaves and this showed an iconic view for the fighters
  • Abraham Lincoln's Election

    Abraham Lincoln's Election
    Before the war starts Abraham Lincoln becomes president of the United States. This led to the Civil War because he wanted to set the union straight and end slavery and once the war ends he does so.
